When FH and I started looking at RH's, I didn't know that everything is included in the pp cost, and thought I'd have to make the decision about open bars....

Just let me know if its a cash bar before I buy your gift, what comes around goes around. Open Bar = Fancy Kitchen Appliance, Cash Bar = Picture Frame

although i agree that open bar is really a must, i also feel like that's a NY thing ... i've been to weddings in other states that had cash bars (and one dry wedding) and nobody seemed to care

I have been to several wedding out of state and i can confirm open bar is a New York thing!!! I took FH to a wedding in Alaska, he almost sh*t himself when he saw that each person got on drink ticket for a bottled beer out of a cooler and then the rest you had to pay for!!! He wanted to get his gift back and lower it!!! Such a new yorker!!!

Re: Interesting Article on Open Bars
Open bars are definitely a must!! I've been to a couple of weddings with cash bars and the cash I spent on the drinks were taken from the money I was giving as a gift.

Re: Interesting Article on Open Bars
I've read wedding magazines that describe some modern nyc weddings as doing a free signature drink, beer in wine in place of an open bar. Long Island weddings are actually more affordable than NYC weddings from what I've looked into.

Re: Interesting Article on Open Bars
My cousin got married in Plattsburgh (ugh!) and they had a cash bar and gave each guest one drink ticket. My mother thought it was so tacky, and she doesn't even drink.
I could never do that to guests, but I guess if that's all your used to....

Re: Interesting Article on Open Bars
Great article. Thanks for sharing!
I would do a dry wedding before charging my guests to drink. That's just rude and awkward. I don't even want a tip jar at my wedding.
Before I say anything, I should mention that I don't drink...at all. No personal reasons behind it, it just makes me feel crappy so I don't do it.
That said, I will be having an open bar with a seasonal/popular assortment of beers, wine and a signature cocktail. I can't afford a full premium open bar and we don't have a ton of drinkers anyway. The signature cocktail is for drinkers who prefer something other than beer or wine, and I think people will be just fine with that.
This is another reason we are only inviting people we know will absolutely WANT to be at our wedding. I don't want people coming just because there is an open bar or people who would even be concerned with that. It's just as tacky to complain about what the bride and groom chose to do.

Re: Interesting Article on Open Bars
i went to an out of town wedding that had a cash bar. my fiance and i had no idea, so we didn't bring any cash with us. luckily, i happened to have $20 in my bag or we wouldn't have had any drinks. a friend of mine, who was also at the wedding, didn't bring her id and they wouldn't serve her.
i know a lot of people are trying to cut corners and it's def a good way to save money. i personally wouldn't do it though. i read in a magazine that if you invited people to your house for dinner, you wouldn't ask them to pay for that dinner. the magazine said the same thing goes for people paying for drinks at your wedding.

Re: Interesting Article on Open Bars
It's def. a NY thing, or maybe a US thing. Every wedding I've ever been to had open bar for at least PART of the night.
We are going to a wedding on Friday and DH asked if there was an open bar. Of course there is!! He said he's been to some with cash bars, particularly in Ireland! That seems backwards to me, but oh well, I suppose we'll find out next July when we go to his cousin's wedding in Ireland!

Re: Interesting Article on Open Bars
Interesting, apparently open bars at a wedding are only a NY thing. I was in a wedding in VA, and my friend is from Long Island born and raised. She had the option of open bar, but she chose cash bar because she said no one in Virginia does that, its only a NY thing.

Open bar is essential! I think I only went to one wedding without open bar and I was ticked off! I agree with you, this concept is a regional thing as are a lot of things we do in NY for weddings. Most people outside of NY give gifts not money, etc.

ITA. i've been to a couple out of state weddings that didnt have open bars and it's apparently very common and not even expected to be open bar.
