It's def. a NY thing, or maybe a US thing. Every wedding I've ever been to had open bar for at least PART of the night.
We are going to a wedding on Friday and DH asked if there was an open bar. Of course there is!! He said he's been to some with cash bars, particularly in Ireland! That seems backwards to me, but oh well, I suppose we'll find out next July when we go to his cousin's wedding in Ireland!
In Ireland is is all Cash Bars. I have never even heard of Open Bars until I came to NY. We were at a wedding in Boston last week and were expecting an Open Bar and it was a Cash one. Luckily we brought money for the after party. But be prepared in Ireland. The couple usually buy 1 round for the toast and thats it.

i went to an out of town wedding that had a cash bar. my fiance and i had no idea, so we didn't bring any cash with us. luckily, i happened to have $20 in my bag or we wouldn't have had any drinks. a friend of mine, who was also at the wedding, didn't bring her id and they wouldn't serve her.
i know a lot of people are trying to cut corners and it's def a good way to save money. i personally wouldn't do it though. i read in a magazine that if you invited people to your house for dinner, you wouldn't ask them to pay for that dinner. the magazine said the same thing goes for people paying for drinks at your wedding.
I remember reading that!
This one cracks me up!: 'Nell Edward, last I checked the 'Lord' turned water into wine-for a WEDDING. Think that one over. The way the story goes it was a 'miracle' in part because the family was SO EMBARRASSED TO NOT HAVE ENOUGH WINE FOR THEIR WEDDING GUESTS....ringing any bells? Just my thoughts on what the LORD's input might be here.'
I once went to a dry wedding which was also an Indian wedding and it was really really boring. We didn't know many people there and the DJ was like a club style DJ or something because he kept playing only short versions of songs and switching around between American and Indian music. Not easy to dance to when you're stone cold sober. There wasn't even a champagne toast. We did leave early and I think a few of their friends decided not to go once they heard it was dry. It was religious reasons (not the bride and groom but their parents) so I guess we shouldn't complain, but the brides dad wouldn't even let them have a cash bar.

My cousin got married in Plattsburgh (ugh!) and they had a cash bar and gave each guest one drink ticket. My mother thought it was so tacky, and she doesn't even drink.
I could never do that to guests, but I guess if that's all your used to....
lol. I graduated from Plattsburgh. I didn't even think Plattburgh even had a catering hall. lol

So funny, my MOH went to Plattsburgh, I used to go there all the time to visit her. Did you ever go to Chi-booms with the hole in the dance floor and big orange construction cones around it??
