Interfaith Ceremony Traditions

Interfaith Ceremony Traditions

I'm Jewish and my FH is Catholic. We're getting married at a non-religious site (a theater) but would like to incorporate both of our backgrounds into the ceremony (we are crossing our fingers that his brother will be our officiant...he said no the first time he was asked!!). So far we are going to have a chuppah, break the glass, he will be escorted down the aisle by his mom and me by both of my parents, so there's the Jewish traditions. But we can't think of any Catholic traditions to incorporate! FH keeps saying the only Catholic tradition is a full mass....obv not happening. Suggestions??

Don't laugh, but at my parents wedding (since divorced) they had a priest (for my mom) a rabii (for my dad) and a minister (the one that was in charge of the chapel)...as my mom puts it (becasue the marriage went badly) it was the start of a very bad joke LOL

Seriously though, why not incorporate a reading? There's always the unity candle that mentioned. What about having a statue set up (Virgin Mary or husband's favorite saint) and laying flowers at their feet as an offering...

Hmm...yea, the unity candle or sand idea works. FH doesn't have any attachment to that tradition though. As far as the statue, A: our budget! and B: statues are a huge nono for judiasm. we're trying to find traditions that won't offend anyone but recognize both of our religious backgrounds. Thanks for the thoughts, girls! Keep them coming!!

We're doing an interfaith Catholic/Jewish wedding. Ours is a little different since we're doing it at a church, but you can include the Catholic vows/ring exchange words. You can do readings from Christian scripture. You can do the handshake of peace. It's not really a Catholic tradition, but you can do a unity candle, which is becoming popular in Catholic weddings.

I am Jewish and DH is Catholic. These are what we did for both traditions:

Jewish:
Both parents walked me down the aisle
Yamulkas were handed out
We had an interfaith kettubah that I got on etsy
DH Broke the glass
We got married under a chuppah
Horah during the reception

Catholic:
Ave Maria played
Unity Candle
A reading
Tarintella during the reception (Italian tradition)
And we're going to get an afformation from the church so that the church recognizes the marriage.

There isn't a lot for Catholic but it was a very GREAT ceremony and it was not a lot of religion just little things for people to notice.

I recommend this book Interfaith Wedding Ceremonies

it has samples of all different kinds of Jewish/Catholic weddings.
