Interracial/ Biracial Couples...

Hi everyone,
I will be marrying my boyfriend next july. I am African American and he is German, Irish and Norweigan. We have a great relationship and I am so looking forward to marrying him. I was wondering if there were any other interracial couples out there ( I know there are). Do you have any advice, wedding pics, interesting stories, etc. to share? It would be nice to see more couples who have gone through it all.
Thanks,
The future mrs. m

Re: Interracial/ Biracial Couples...

I am White/American-Italian heritage
DH is Ecuadorian/Hispanic- born and raised until he was 13 years old. His first language was Spanish and he learned English once he came to the US...
We included a saying on invites about joining our cultures together...I forget the saying, but can find it...

Edited to Add my hot hispanic hubby!

Also,
During our ceremony - DH's uncle did one of the readings in Spanish and we had the other reading in English

The band sang the Mother/son song in spanish
and we made sure there was some merengue , salsa, and bachata played, what the band could not do-there was a cd played-it worked out well-

the thank you on the programs was in spanish and english

Re: Interracial/ Biracial Couples...

I am Puerto Rican and my FH's parents are Croatian and Italian (but like my parents they were born here.) Honestly we have never really looked at ourselve slik an interracial couple because his family and friends have always been very accepting. However MY friends...I was surprised and disaappointed that I had to deal with (for 3 out of 4 years) rather tactless jokes about dating a white guy. He takes it with a grain of salt and gives as good as he gets but it does bother me because we could care less. our kids will be bi-racial. Hopefully they won't get the same ridiculousness we have from 'friends.'

Actually they won't-because those people won't be around. :)

I am half korean/half white and jewish, and my fh is german and jewish. It's great to 'meet' other interracial couples - though it's unfortunate that in 2007 there aren't more of us!

Re: Interracial/ Biracial Couples...

I am Indian (my family is from Trinidad & Tobago) and my DH is Spanish (his family is from the Dominican Republic).

It was important to us to represent both of our cultures in our wedding. We did the following:

1) Had a party the night before the wedding at my parent's house with Indian food and music. We always do this in Trinidad. I also wore traditional Indian wear.

2) Added the signing of the marriage certificate as part of our ceremony (we do this in muslim weddings in Trinidad)

3) Had our DJ play Spanish, Indian and Caribbean music

4) Hired a bilingual MC so he could easily switch between English and Spanish

5) Gave out traditional Indian and Spanish sweets as our favor

Doing these things definitely made the wedding our own.

There will always be bumps in the road - I know that some members of his family were not so accepting of me and I am sure that some of my family felt the same way. BUT both of our parents are very supportive of our relationship and WE love each other so I could care less what other people think.

Just remember that communication is critical to any relationship - interracial or not.

If you want to see pics, take a look at my review.

Welcome to LIW!

Re: Interracial/ Biracial Couples...

I am Filipino/Chinese/Irish/Spanish and FH is Irish. We never had any issues about our backgrounds and both families have been really wonderful and accepting. We all joke around that the next generation will be like our own UN since my cousin married someone from Ghana.

For the wedding, we are trying to meld some different cultural aspects into our ceremony and reception in order to bring the two together.

I am English / Irish and my husband is Chinese. We had our rehearsal dinner at a Chinese restaurant with a traditional Chinese wedding menu. We also observed certain superstitions to make his family more comfortable. We had an amazing wedding and I am looking forward to having beautiful children together.

Ayadali- who did you hire for your mc and dj?

My fiance is Dominican and I'm Guyanese. We also want to ensure both cultures are represented during our wedding festivities.
