Invitation Etiquette

Various bridal magazines and books say that a monogram should not go on an invitation (since it goes out before you are actually married). But when I went to look at invitations several examples had monograms on them. Does anyone know what the proper etiquette is? I really like the monogram but don't want to use it if it is 'improper.'
