What should I write for attire if I want everyone to wear formal attire, but not a black bow tie (since I don't want them matching the waiters)? But I also don't want girls in cocktail dresses. Please help. Thanks.

Re: Invitation wording
I noticed that on a co-workers daughters invite on the bottom in the corner it said Black Tie Optional

Re: Invitation wording
touchy topic. no matter what you state, men will mostly wear a suit and women a cocktail dress.
enforcing a dress code is not well received by many people.

Re: Invitation wording
can I just ask why you want to put a 'dress code' on the invitation... is this something I should look into? Don't people usually dress nice to a wedding anyway??

Re: Invitation wording
not that faux pas are really important but i did read somewhere that stating black tie isn't 'proper' and that the location itself usually just gives the way people are supposed to dress away...however, no matter what you write, you will always have people who will dress however they desire.
May I ask, and I don't mean any offense by this at all, why no cocktail dresses?

Re: Invitation wording
Thanks for the responses. Maybe I'll leave it off the invite and just mention something on my wedding website.
lilqtny: I just want it to be formal, and cocktail dresses aren't as formal as I would like. This is just my preference. It's true I shouldn't be picky about what other people wear.
But with black tie optional, does that mean that men should feel free to wear a bow tie. (This isn't me being picky, I just don't want them matching the wait staff. Nor would they want to match.)

Re: Invitation wording
if it is a saturday night girls dont wear cocktail dresses especially if you put black tie optional..... if it is a day or friday night people will probably wear what they want no matter what you write on the invite
black tie means men will be in tuxes not bow ties
yes stating black tie is a bit tacky but there is nothing wrong with black tie optional... most people put this
black tie is telling people to get every dressy while black tie optional means you can get as fancy as you want

Re: Invitation wording
If you've got a website, that's the perfect place to put it. You can also spread the word verbally, as I'm sure people will be talking alot about who's wearing what.
Don't add it to the invites, as some will see it as tacky.
