invitation wording - opinions, please!!

Original post by alexlynn7

what do you all think of this wording for invites? i want to keep my late father as an active part of the invitation, if that makes sense... please let me know (honestly) what you think.

btw, it's a formal wedding, so going for the formal wording here...

Mrs. L.S.,
on behalf of herself and of the late Mr. J. S.,
requests the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
Dr. A. L. S.
to
Dr. G. M. W.
on Saturday, the twenty-eighth of May
Two thousand and Five
at six-thirty in the evening
Idle Hour, the Vanderbilt Mansion at Oakdale
Idle Hour Boulevard
Oakdale, New York

Dinner and dancing to follow

thanks for your input, everyone

Okay, i know this means that both are hosting but how about...

You
and
FH
together with their parents
Your mom and the late dad
and
mr and mrs. fh
request the honour of your presence
at their marriage

.

To avoid the 'cumbersome' nature of the the names- you can put the names at the bottom.. This is what we did.. something along the lines of:

Your company is requested blah blah
at the marriage of [their children]
Randi Beth
and
Matthew Lawrence
at the blah blah at x time

then after all that- we just listed the parent names.. no mr and mrs-- then my mom's name would not be on the inivte- she would be Mrs. Stepfather- I was not having that--

If you put the names at the bottom- you can write a little bit more about your dad- and the wording would not seem as awkward since it is at the bottom, rather the top.

hmmm.... something like this, maybe?

your company is requested at the marriage of

A.L.S.

to

G.M.W.

at the blah blah at x time

Reception to follow

Mrs. L.S. and the late Mr. J.S.

????

exactly-- but, I think you can do without reception to follow-- we did not add it.. also if you are having black tie- or black tie optional, you'll need to write that too.

But, I think you can write like a little something nice too- since it is at the bottom-- if you want to say something else about your dad- ya know?

...him requesting from the beyond JMHO

very well put, neenie...

it's good to get other people's opinion on this issue, because frankly, my dad remains so vivid in my memory (and really, in my life) that it almost seems natural to include him prominently in the invitation. but i realize that other people might find it a little creepy.

so i will have to find a suitable compromise...

My friend's mom died six months before her wedding and she chose to do it this way and received many compliments on it:

Mr XXX
with special memories of (mom's name)
requests your presence at the marriage of his daughter
etc.

You could do
Your mom
with special memories of (dad)
etc.

Just a suggestion so your dad can be on the invite as well as in your heart.

She felt good about it since her mom was on the invite and so many people complimented her on it. If you want your dad's name on the invite, you can definitely do it.

Daniela, what a beautiful suggestion. I like this too. TO be clear, I was only citing 'etiquette book protocols' -- as I thought I made very clear, Alex, you should do whatever feels right to you. I think the idea of honoring your Dad is really really special and far outweighs any traditional rules. Whatever you do, though, I expect it will be fabulous, like your dress, flowers, reception locale.....

I think it is a wonderful idea to have your Dad on the invite. Brian's Mom past away when he was little and we are also trying to come up with something like this. Please let me know what you decide. Thanks!
