Invitations...and a guest

Invitations...and a guest

Hi Ladies: Is it okay to allow some guests to bring a guest and not extend that courtesy to others? I have friends that I want to be able to bring a guest, but for example, I have older cousins that I am not really close to and don't particularly want them to be able to bring a guest. Thoughts???

Hmm, if they're over the age of 18 they most likely have significant others that they'd want to bring as guests. So I think you really should let them. Just think if one of your cousins was getting married and didn't want you to bring your FH. That's not right!!

That's fine. We only invited people in relationships with a guest.

I do have to agree with the above post. We can't invite everyone with a guest, so we're only inviting people with a guest if they're dating someone seriously, engaged, living together, or married, whether they are friends or family.

I think what is going to happen is that cousins WITHOUT a significant other are going to bring a friend to just get some free food because the invitation said they could. I have lots of cousins and I am afraid of having a whole bunch of people there that I don't know if I allow them to bring just anyone they want.

IMO you have to draw the line somewhere- BUT your guests may not agree

That is exactly what we are doing.

we're only letting people in serious relationships bring a guest- we're paying too much money to just let people bring their ' flavors of the week' or like you said a friend just to get some 'free' food and drinks...
we even have one family with 3 'kids' in their 20s- the girl has been dating this guy for a couple years so we are inviting her to bring him- but her 2 brothers aren't seriously dating anyone, so we didn't put ' and guest' on their invites- i'm sure they probably thought it was rude- but they aren't the ones paying for the wedding.... like somebody else said, you have to draw the line somewhere.

lol i can vouch for this too- we had my mom friend who we didn't invite with a date send her response card back with ' 2 will attend'... uh... last time i checked, your invite only had one name on it... bringing the one extra person isn't too big a deal, but at least call and ask if its ok with the people who are paying for it!

This is what I am doing...If the person is in a relationship then I am going to include a guest. If they are singe then I am not. Our list is getting out of control and that is just one way to cut back!

the only single women who I am not inviting with a guest are FMIL friends who are elderly (some are widows and others divorced).

Unfortunately I disagree but there are always people that will. FI & I are paying for the majority of our wedding so like most of you we are in the same boat. There have been times that I was not invited to a wedding with him & we were seriously dating and I got annoyed as did he. Then another wedding he was invited to I wasn't invited and the night before the wedding we got a phone call inviting me b/c they were below their minimum and needed more peopel to come. Anyway from that moment on I felt that nobody should be invited w/o a guest. THere will be peopel that you invite with a guest that won't even bring one if they have nobody to bring but there are other peopel that will bring someone and there is nothing wrong with that. Also you may not know if someone is seriously dating someone--you never know. It isn't a free ride--the person you invited will double their gift in most cases and if they don't that isn't the point--you want all your guest to enjoy themselves isn't that one of the reasons we are having a reception.

Maybe I'm wrong but I guess it is a little different when it comes to family. Allowing a friend who doesn't know anyone else at your wedding to bring a guest makes sense to me. You definitely want that person to have a good time given that they likely only really know you and maybe FH and both of you/us are going to be busy. But family knows almost everyone at the wedding. I guess I just don't see why my cousins need to 'bring a date' so to speak when they can enjoy the wedding with other family members. My comments do not apply to married cousins (none of my cousins live with anyone or are engaged).

Anyway, great comments ladies. Still trying to figure out on what side of the line I fall.
