invitations...why?

why is it so TABOO to print out labels for your invites, or do a printer calligraphy?

I need to know, i don't get it.

Because the labels take up more room in the trash when they throw the envelope out??

Lets hear it for labels!!

You can always use crayon

Whatever.. if you want to print you print! Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever recieved an invite with the address done in authentic calligraphy.

I printed them out directly on the envelope.l I dont believe in etiquette

I'm doing clear labels...FH's stepbrother just got married in December and even though I'm all wedding-obsessed, I still threw it in the garbage calligraphy and all.To me, that's what everyone else is going to do with it...especially the envelope so I'll do labels and forget about it.

I think tis fine. You are supposed to have them handwritten cus it is more personal, but I dont think most people care either way.

Although i think it looks nicer to print them on the envelope rather than labels, but thats just my opinion- most people prolly wont notice or care!

It's to support our Garbage-Men... A whole movement on things you need for your wedding that people will most likely throw away or NEVER remember - LOL - Hop on this Bandwagon!!!!

And WHY do we need to write out a STATE? I mean - do you not know what I mean if I put NY or FL???

Re: invitations...why?

I custom designed each of my envelopes and did printer calligraphy (used two different fonts & formats needed to be changed depending on last name, etc)

It definetly took me WAAAAAY longer to do this (many many many hours) then to write the addresses myself sooooo all those naysayers can sit on it!!

Re: invitations...why?

You don't HAVE to use calligraphy, you don't HAVE to print (if you choose to print) directly on the envelopes, you don't HAVE to use labels, you don't HAVE to do anything frankly.

I CHOSE to have my invitation done in hand calligraphy because ME, MYSELF AND I, happen to love the way it looks. I wanted that look on my invitation so I did it, and my invitations and envelopes got the reaction I was hoping for. I also CHOSE to have my calligrapher write out the state name and put the zip code on its own line below the city and state because again, ME, MYSELF AND I, like the way it looks. It also happened to be not very expensive at all and they were back in my hands from the calligrapher, all addressed and ready to go, minus any headaches on my part, in a week....so that, was a complete bonus! It is a personal decision, do what YOU WANT.

I agree! Everyone individualizes their weddings so much these days that the only that basically has remained is that you are marrying someone you love, seeing as you can't marry yourself. I say so what works for you since no one else is offering to address for you for FREE.

Re: invitations...why?

I think many etiquette books now have changed the rules, more updated version.

I am doing calligraphy for my own reasons. For one my printer at home is causing alot of trouble, even printing out one page is a headache. So i am not spending money for a new printer and ink cartridge because that will cost me more. FH's printer is completely not working. I also dont want to deal with them PERIOD. Last time i did invites i wanted to strangle somebody so this time once i get them i want someone else to do them bc with so close to the wedding and everything else going on, i really think i will lose it trying to do invites which i cant anyways bc i dont have a functional printer.

Calligraphy is going to cost me under $200, i compared that to the cost of a printer, and ink cartridges and didn't make sense

I dont care what others do, do what makes you happy. And if you are happy with your decision then dont feel the need to justify yourself and dont care what everyone else is doing. I dont care what anybody thinks about my choice or what their opinions are. If anybody has anything to say then maybe they can volunteer to do them all for me

Re: invitations...why?

if you want to know the reason why in etiquette books it says to either hand write or get calligraphy, here is the reason. Since nobody really answered the main question.

They say it is more personal, like you are personally taking the time out to invite them. Instead of doing things the way they might be done at a business for example. But this was also written during different times and it was how things were typically done

oh good, i'm glad. You'll love her, she's so sweet. When she sends you her invoice, she addresses your address in like crazy colors and calligraphy, such a nice touch. She definitely loves what she does and you can tell.

And like I said, ask her for her work email, that's what I did and it made it much easier because I ended up having sooo many last minute changes (when I found I had incorrect addresses) and add-ons, I just emailed them to her at work and she would send them out that night before the post office closed.
