invitations...why?

You don't HAVE to use calligraphy, you don't HAVE to print (if you choose to print) directly on the envelopes, you don't HAVE to use labels, you don't HAVE to do anything frankly.

I CHOSE to have my invitation done in hand calligraphy because ME, MYSELF AND I, happen to love the way it looks. I wanted that look on my invitation so I did it, and my invitations and envelopes got the reaction I was hoping for. I also CHOSE to have my calligrapher write out the state name and put the zip code on its own line below the city and state because again, ME, MYSELF AND I, like the way it looks. It also happened to be not very expensive at all and they were back in my hands from the calligrapher, all addressed and ready to go, minus any headaches on my part, in a week....so that, was a complete bonus! It is a personal decision, do what YOU WANT.

I am right with you on this one!

I think that in addition to it looking more personal to hand write them, or to do digital calligraphy on the envelopes rather than on labels, I personally think that it looks more formal. Labels, TO ME, make whatever they are on look like a piece of mail that was sent to me because I was on a list. If you don't feel that way - use labels. Just wanted to add to why calligraphy / no labels may have been considered 'proper' by some.

i agree totally. I think it's fine to use labels in most cases, but my cousin used them for her wedding invitation and she didn't make the font any bigger and it was this teeny label on a huge invite.

Personally i think it looks fine when the addresses are printed on the envelope but to save aggravation and time I'll probably do hand calligraphy. my friend did it and it wasn't expensive at all.

I think many etiquette books now have changed the rules, more updated version.

I am doing calligraphy for my own reasons. For one my printer at home is causing alot of trouble, even printing out one page is a headache. So i am not spending money for a new printer and ink cartridge because that will cost me more. FH's printer is completely not working. I also dont want to deal with them PERIOD. Last time i did invites i wanted to strangle somebody so this time once i get them i want someone else to do them bc with so close to the wedding and everything else going on, i really think i will lose it trying to do invites which i cant anyways bc i dont have a functional printer.

Calligraphy is going to cost me under $200, i compared that to the cost of a printer, and ink cartridges and didn't make sense

I dont care what others do, do what makes you happy. And if you are happy with your decision then dont feel the need to justify yourself and dont care what everyone else is doing. I dont care what anybody thinks about my choice or what their opinions are. If anybody has anything to say then maybe they can volunteer to do them all for me

totally feel the same - i printed our invites for our e-party and they came out nice but i did them at work with the secretary's printer and it was such a pain - we were always worried about jamming.

I printed directly onto my envelopes using a nice font. In my opinion, they came out nice! I also received several wedding invitations in the past year, and they all either had printed labels or the addresses had been printed right onto the envelope. I think some of the wedding etiquette rules are a little outdated.
