Invites. Do they NEED a liner?

Invites. Do they NEED a liner?

Upon consultation with my invitation lady, I was informed that the very formal engraved invitations that I (and my hard to please mother) love so much are not available with an envelope liner. I do plan on having inner envelopes. I also plan on using ornate hand calligraphy (versus computer printing) on both the inner AND outer envelopes in addition to the table place cards. I won't make liners myself because unless they are perfectly cut, they will look lousy and cheapen the invitations thus defeating the purpose of an elegant formal invitation. We looked at many books already and hadn't seen what we wanted.

So I ask you LIWers, should this bother me? Should I go with the invitation I love and forgo a liner or should I look for something else that comes with a liner?

Here is the invitation:

My family would notice. I come from a long line of detail oriented (nowadays called 'ANAL') people. I personally don't care, I just wanted opinions so I could say 'The brides on LIW said it was ok!'

I think you should do what you like... i also don't think it's bad... but if you're uncomfortable with it, maybe there is something else that you can find that does come with an innner

hope that helped!

I think it's your wedding and if those are the invites that YOU love....then go for it. You'll kick yourself in the butt later if you fore-go the invite because of a silly liner and get something you weren't 100% sure of.

I am in your same boat---long line of anal retentive (must impress everybody) family members.....to me, it's a piece of paper that looks pretty for a few months--and then, like everything else, people forget it and throw it out. Liner and all!!! So, if you love the invites....skip the liner and get what you love!!

By the way--beautiful invites!!!

Only the inner envelope is lined - not both. The outer envelope was meant to protect the inner envelope. We have letterpress invitations (including letterpress direction cards on matching paper) I even tissue papered between each piece so both the invite and response cards got tissue cut to size. We had calligraphy too.

Thanks. They are almost in the style of the one my parents used 49 years ago though the year is not on the invitation. They were married in 1956.

Neither envelope is lined with this invitation. They do include the tissue paper which we will use.

I really don't think you need a liner. Honestly, I'm trying to think if mine had one and I really can't remember. Not only that, we didn't have an inner envelope or tissue paper!

We didn't have a liner and we didn't use an inner envelope either. In place of the inner envelope, we wrapped our invitation in a reprint of an antique nautical chart. They were a huge hit. Everyone commented on how unique and different they were. I think you should do whatever you want.

I think you know it isn't necessary...but it sounds like this may bother you in the long run. I know that if I chose something I loved and then something about it was a little off, I would be disturbed.

Like you said it is very formal, don't you think you should complete the look with the lined inner envelopes? But then again if you can overcome what your mom or what others say, then forget about the liners. Just remember, you are going out of your way to make them very formal....

Forget the liner. Mine are formal and I have no liner. People won't notice at all.

The whole point of the liner is not even to look formal. The liner was out in place to absorb excess ink. Modern printign technology obviates the need for the liner entirely

oh, nevermind- I thought you needed the tissue paper, that's what I have.

Sorry

If there are other designs by the same mfg that have inner envelopes with lining...couldn't your vendor just order the inner lined envelopes separately from the mfg? If it bothers you this might be a route to explore.
