Re: Invites time line
I'm sending mine out about 12 weeks before. It'll be 8 weeks before the RSVP date and that is about 5 1/2 weeks before the wedding.

When should you order the invites? How long do they take to make?

Re: Invites time line
Mine are custom made and they are only taking a few weeks, but it depends on how quickly they are made.... so it might be different, but the turnaround, I would think.. should be no more than maybe 3-4 weeks.. after you approve the design.

Depends on the vendor. Mine had a long list of people and it took 7 months and I started the process a year before the wedding.

I did send out STDs though. If I didn't send out STDs I wouldve wanted to send them out earlier.
Oh let me tell you invites, try to get them early to avoid any problems. We ran into a few which made me really annoyed, frustrated, and pissed off, but in the end everything turned out good. It just took time as in designing ourselves, basically doing the photoshop work they should have done, and also having them reprint the entire set after the aggravation of them not knowing how to design it properly, to getting it to the color it was supposed to look like. What a pain. But end product we loved...
just... order early to deal with issues in plenty of time in case they arrive..

Yep this is me. You'll want 4-6 weeks to figure out seating and make the place cards. And you'll want to give people 4-6 weeks to RSVP. So really, you want to have them ready to go anywhere between 2-3 months before the wedding.
When you backtrack from there, it could take 2 weeks to get a caligrapher or printer for the envelopes, and up to a month to finalize the invites, look at proofs, and get them printed. So that's about 4 1/2 months AT MOST.
My printer had them for me within 1 week from the time we ordered.
