I work in a large company however in my immediate department there are only 5 of us including myself. 2 of my co-workers are based in NY and the other 2 are in Europe. Since we`re such a small group I plan on inviting my 2 co-workers here but I don`t know if I should invite the other 2 in Europe. Considering the size of our department it doesn`t seem right leaving out 2 people however I don`t want them to think I sent them an invitation just to get a gift. Any ideas?

Inviting co-workers
Are the European employees going to be in the area? If not, I wouldn`t worry about sending an invite to them, since they`re so far away. But, normally, inviting co-workers is hard. I think it`s better to invite all co-workers, or none. This way, no one will be offended.

Chances are these two would buy you a gift even if they didn't receive an invitation, considering your small group. Extending them one may make them feel good that you wished they could attend even if they can't. It will alleviate any tension if you are inviting the others....and plus you sound almost sure they won't be there so you don't have a lot to lose.

I also think of any group of possible invitees, co-workers are generally most understanding about not being invited. I work for a small firm and we all know each other real well, but I only invited my two bosses and 3 closest friends..no one else seems upset. It certainly couldn't hurt to send invites to those in Europe so they don't feel left out, especially if you think the chance of attending is slim.

I felt the 'rock and a hard spot' too when inviting co-workers. We have 9 people in the department... Here`s an idea... If you can honestly have the Euro guests there (you can afford their plate if they actually come), then send the invitation with a HAND written note saying something like: I know you`re very far away to join us at our wedding, but I wanted to let you know that you`re thought of. I guess this would help eliviate the pressure for them to come or send a gift, and it`s a token to include them when it`s probable they can`t come...it lets them know you care.
If you cannot afford the plate on the chance they do come, send a wedding announcement. I sent announcements to five of my coworkers (not in the department) who I wanted them to know they were thought of...
