Inviting people with guests

Inviting people with guests

I'm curious how people are handling the issue of inviting people with guests. I know that many people invite all their friends and family members with a guest, while other may only invite those in a serious relationship. I already know that I can't invite all my friends with guests, but I am feeling weird about this, so I just wanted to see what the general trend was out there. Thanks!

Every single person over the age of 18 was invited with a guest. I didn't want to make anyone uncomfortable. I remeber when I was younger and not invited with a guest to stuff and I always felt sort of awkward.

Everyone over 18 was invited with a guest...except for a few of FH's 'old' aunts (some were in their 70's)...they were not invited with guests.

everyone except for my middle school cousins are invited witha guest.
i dont' think it's fair for me to let some people come with a guest and others not....i mean, they might not be in a serious relationship when i send out the invites...but who knows what will happen in a month or two after it?
i don't feel like making anyone uncomfortable so they all get invited with a guest!!

Is it really necessary to allow everyone over 18 to bring a guest???
I have a number of friends without girlfriends/boyfriends and I really don't want them to find someone just to bring to the wedding. If I know they have a girlfriend/boyfriend then that is a different story.

When I was getting married I posed this same question.

Ideally you would like to invite EVERYONE with a guest, but sometimes buget restrictions do not make it possible.

For the most part I invited everyone with a guest, but there were a few exceptions like older single woman who were family friends- they understood.

My general rule so far has been: if they are in a serious relationship, are living together or are engaged, they can bring a guest. My problems arise because I have tons of cousins around my age that may or may not have a girlfriend/boyfriend at the time of my wedding. So, if by the time I am ready to send out invites they aren't in a serious relationship, they don't get to bring a guest. For example, my 21 yr old male cousin who is in the BP, does not have a GF right now so most likely he will be invited sans guest. Sorry, but I'm not paying over $100 a head for someone I barely know to show up at my wedding and then I'll probably never see them again.

We invited everyone with a guest.

I think it's fine to not invite everyone with a guest, as long as you tell them that you are doing that. People understand budgets and how much receptions cost, so if yu tell them they are less likely to be bitter about it than just having a single invitation show up.

JMO from someone who's seen it happen, and it wasn't pretty.

I agree 100% with Ronz76.
I don't want my single friends just hitting their little black book seeing who they can scrounge up to get to take to MY wedding. Absolutely not.
My friends who don't have a significant other will understand.
Those who don't understand, don't have to come.
I'm really not trying to be rude, I just don't want any ol body at my wedding.
Hey, maybe the singles will meet someone like that!
And as far as I've seen it is not improper ettiquette to do this.

What about sending out the STD's? I am about to send them out and if I know I am going to invite someone to the wedding with a guest do I put 'and guest' on the STD? Or am I just putting the person because I want that particular person to save the date????

I am only inviting them with a guest if they are engaged, married or in a serious relationship- Ex:living togteher, or together for at least a year. We are paying for this whole wedding by ourselves, in cash. Also, only if they did not know a single sole I would invite them with a guest.

Exactly. It would be nice to invite the singles with guests, but really, that would add over $2,000 (almost my entire honeymoon budget!). Especially if this is someone they had to find to bring and I won't ever see them again. Over a year or engaged only. Or if they don't know *anyone*. There's family I'm not inviting and now I'm supposed to pay for people's guests?!

Sorry, this topic just irks me.

Re: Inviting people with guests

I can sympathize with budget & space constraints and would completely understand being invited alone in that situation. But unless that was the situcation, I would invite everyone over 18 with a guest.

(We were lucky that we didnt have to cut 'and guests' but I would have cut someplace else that was less important then the comfort of our guests).

I would never be able to determine how serious someone's relationship is by the length of time they were dating - I know people that know immediately that they will be together forever.

And I still don't know DH's cousin's serious boyfriend's name and I doubt I will ever see him again since DH doesn't really keep in touch with that side of the family.

I was invited to a wedding once without a guest and honestly, I hated having to go to the wedding alone. I'm under budget constraints as well, so I cut my guest list in order to accommodate everyone with a guest. Even though they have the option, I know some of my family and friends will come alone anyway.

I invited those who were married, engaged or in a long-term relationship with guests.

I'm only doing long term and engaged couples. If I'm inviting people that won't know anyone there, it's a different story. My friends all have each other and we go out all the time with my single friends coming alone and my friends with relationships coming together.

If people want to go to your wedding it's for you, they'll understand.

If you have the money to do it, you may invite everyone with a guest. I, on the other hand, can't because we already have more guests than expected. It's all about budget. P.S. Everyone attending knows eachother someway, so I'm not worried about anyone feeling uncomfortable.
