Just wondering if you're inviting the priest to your reception?

Re: Inviting priest to reception
We are, but he baptized my FH and has known the family for many, MANY years I do believe that it's tradition to do so, though; even if you haven't known them personally like we have...HTH!

Are you supposed to? He's not 'our' priest... Wedding etiquette has us at a loss!

I don't think you have to invite him...but if you know each other well then I would. But if he is not close to you then I wouldn't.

I will extend the invitation as a courtesy, but I don't expect he will come.

We're inviting ours. He is really close to FH and since he was FH's youth minister they kind of grew up together. If he wasn't a family friend, or just a officiant that was 'hired' I don't think that I would.

You don't have to, he's a vendor like anyone else, doing you a service for a fee.
However, we got married at the RH and did invite him to the reception. We didn't know him personally but thought it would be a nice offer, he declined but appreciated the thought.
So basically, if you want to that's ok. But if you don't really want to or don't have the room then you don't have to invite him and that's ok too!

I'm in the same boat, my mother works for the church. FH & I are not marrying in the church but Father Thomas has been beyond helpful. He also married my cousin and knows my aunt rather well. He has two seats in the reception hall should he chose to come.

I heard somewhere that you are supposed to invite the clergy, but they usually decline and (if anything) attend the cocktail hour to be nice.

Re: Inviting priest to reception
We only know our pastor since we started taking marriage classes with him a few months ago. We invited him and he was actually the first to rsvp back for him and his wife. We dont know him at all personally, but we felt it was the right thing to do to invite him.

Re: Inviting priest to reception
Proper etiquette dictates that you do invite the priest or deacon or whatever clergy is marrying you. Reality usually dictates he either won't come (they are either too busy or don't know you well enough to spend 5 hours by himself at a reception where he won't know anyone) or will only come to the cocktail hour only.
Ours attended the whole reception as he is a family friend.

Re: Inviting priest to reception
I extended the invitation not expecting him to come but he accepted!! I've heard of people doing it out of courtesy & I didnt want him to think we were rude so we asked.... Might as well throw it out there and see what he says. This way at least you offered (and God will remember that) LOL Good Karma later on!!!

Oh thanks this is a perfect way of me to reply to my darling FMIL who seems to think the invite should not be extended. She had the nerve to say it was being wasted on him!!!!! I mean HELLO MC FLY this is not some man off the street. She's just bitter from her own past dealings with the Roman Catholic Church.
