We're doing a Mediterranean cruise followed by 6 days in Ireland. We're unsure if we should do an escorted tour (from Dublin down to Shannon stopping in Waterford & the cliffs & more) or if we should do the self-drive tour. Neither of us have ever been & we keep getting mixed reviews (don't drive, drive, etc.)

Re: Ireland...
If it is your first time in Ireland I would recommend the escorted tour. I know there are restrictions as far as being able to manage your own time, but the driving in the city & getting out of the City of Dublin is rough. I have been there and we mostly rely on public transportation to get around, which can be costly and wastes a lot of time.

I would agree with HearzBellz. I'm from Dublin and everytime I go home I spend so much time in the car driving from friends to family that it's never much of a vacation. I have plenty of friends over here who are older and from Ireland and they have done the guided tour and loved it. They can bring you to some very interesting towns that you wouldn't necessarily go to yourself if you were driving.
Another thing, apart from the gridlock in Dublin City, when you get out into the rural areas there is barely enough room for one car on the roads.
I'll be happy to answer any questions you have! Enjoy

and not to mention that there's No guard rails!
i did both while i was over there. for a couple of weeks, we were visiting family, and for that time, we had a car and drove, but then after that, we did the Tour, and really got to see more than we would have if we did it on our own. Also, the tour guide was great, so i felt like i got even more of the 'history' of each place that we went to. Im not a big fan of being on anyone else's schedule, but to experience all that we did- it was totally worth it.
