is 1 bathroom a deal breaker for you?

is 1 bathroom a deal breaker for you?

we saw a place today, good neighborhood, has some charm, needs TLC and the basement was a little wet (to be questioned...)

other than the basement and the smallish 2nd floor (they claim 4 bedrooms but it is really a cramped 3 with room for a desk in the 4th) my biggest issue is the lack of a second bathroom.

it's overpriced but we are contemplating making a low ball offer anyway...is 1 bathroom a deal breaker for you? up until this house it always was for me...

ETA: i couldn't see an easy way to add another one, i think if there was one it would have already been done...

I'd have to say yes....I grew up with 1 bathroom and it was horrible

we're going to closing in a few weeks on our first home...3 bedroom 1 bath ranch in PJS...while I didn't like the fact that it only had one bathroom, everything else about the house was a positive...the location, the condition of the home, 1/2 an acre, and of course the price. we figured we can always add a bath down the road. that has been my approach all along, but DH and i for the life of us couldn't figure out with the layout being what it is, how it would be possible and financially practical...

how many people shared it? this house would be short term as it's just too small for more than one older kid. friends of ours have this setup and they complain about it all the time. it's horrible when guests come over!

I would say yes. With DH and I 1 bathroom will do but since we're planning on having children I would like at least 2 toilets in the house. With the prices of houses these days I don't think that's asking for too much.

ETA: I might reconsider if it's there is space to put in a 2nd bathroom.

it was a deal breaker for us - we only looked at houses that had at least 1.5 baths (wound up with 2.5)

That's the thing- houses are so much $$ and you aren't even getting two bathrooms!

If you were really going to save on the purchase price and adding a second bath was a real option down the road, I would say yes.

I grew up in a house with one and for the most part it was not a huge problem. And I probably would not have turned down the house we are getting if it only had 1 bath. But I like the fact that it has 1.5. I think that will be enough.

No, it would not be a deal breaker. We had other priorities. But we wound up finding a house with 2 full baths. The possibility of adding a 2nd bathroom would be nice though.

We're in the process of buying a house with only one bath and it's not really a big deal to us. There is also room to add a second bath, though. I grew up with 1 bath for the most part. There actually was a post about this recently but I forget by which person.

i think its a personal choice really. i was looking for a home with two but if i fell in love with a home that only had one i would have went for it.

I would not bid on a house with 1 bathroom...I grew up with 1 1/2 & it was horrible...Everyone was always in everyone's way especially when it came to shower time...

depeneds on how much the house is- and how good a deal it is-- i would recommend at least putting a half bath in(toilet and sink)-- as 1 bathroom would be difficult- especially when you have kids, and company over

It really depends on the potential of the house...

BUT i wouldn't be happy with a 1 bath house!
In fact i am not even looking and don't think i would look at any

Our house now only has one bathroom but it's fine bc it is just DH and I right now. But when we move, it will be to a bigger house, and it will have to have more than one bathroom - so it would be a deal breaker for me. We would def need more than one bc our next home is going to be where we raise our family and I don't want to move again after that.

It would be for us, however we haven't looked at any homes with less than 1.5 baths...2(or +), being a preference.

For us, a 1 bath house is impractical.

We only wanted 1.5+ also, but our house will only have one. There is room for expansion upstairs, so we plan on adding a nice master suite and bath in 2-3 years.

We just bought a house with 1.5 bath- it's fine for us for now, and even if we have two kids down the line we think. But to add to the selling value of the house, when we redo the attic (years from now- hopefully!) we think we are going to try and put in another bath up there!
