Is 2 hour drive too far for my guests?

Original post by yswedding

Is it too much to ask my family who lives in Brooklyn,NY to drive to North Fork area on the day of my wedding?

According to google maps:
81.4 mi – about 1 hour 39 mins
up to 2 hours 0 mins in traffic

What do you guys think about getting a bus or two or three?

okay, buses then, so what do I do with those family that refuse anything extra I try to do for them? Do I just require they use the bus?

I don't think its too far. They could always stay over. You are not obligated to get them there & back from two hours away.

I had a LOT of family members come from Staten Island to the Hamptons for my wedding. I blocked rooms & got a bus to take them from the hotel to the wedding. Many hotels provide shuttles too.

it depends what type of family you have....

we live in staten island and so does a lot of our immediate family and we are getting married at Jericho Terrace - its about a 40 minute ride from us without traffic.....

people on my side of the family were complaining from day one....

the people are my FHs side of the family are thrilled and could care less that its 40 minutes away

so i really think it depends on the type of people you have in your family.....my attitude is that if 40 minutes is too far for you, then fine, dont come

we are blocking hotel rooms for our guests that want to stay over (my FH's sister also got married at JT and the majority of FH's family stayed over, as well as friends) and we are also going to provide transportation from the hotel to the RH so that all of the guests who are staying over don't have to drink and drive - i think that its the right thing to do.....

woah, 40 minutes too far? where did they want you to get married?

It's been interesting to read the responses. I'm in the DC area, and weddings here can take place anywhere: in the city itself, in central or southern VA, in western VA horse country, on the Eastern Shore of MD or VA, etc. Two hours is far for people in our area, but it's not unexpected and the guests do not expect a bus. I am surprised that in the NY area, where people travel equally far (in time and distance) on a daily basis for work, would expect a bus to go to a one-time event like a wedding. I agree that a block of rooms is a good idea.

You're so right! I have over a 2hr round trip commute everyday. I'm so not stressing over the travel thing now, I'll offer a bus, I'll block rooms.

Now, how do I stop it from raining on my day?

that's when you break out with a dance to the sun gods

This is something that fh and I tried to take into consideration before we booked. We also live in brooklyn but really didn't like any of the venues. So, we checked out LI. I think the fact you are renting a bus is considerate. Will the bus take them roundtrip (to and from). Our venue is about 40 mins away from bklyn.

You can ask yourself if the shoe was on the other foot would it bother you. And, then decide from there.

sorry, i just think it's way too far. especially if someone doesn't live close to the church or the RH. they could potentially be driving over 4 hours that day. the wedding itself is usually tiring, add on all the driving and i'd be grumpy! lol.

Don't say that, we are getting married on that day also. I have requested a 'no rain day'.

I had my wedding on the Northfork.
It was great - Got some complaints along the way, I didn't let it bother me. You simply cannot have your wedding to please everyone. It is your day.

The people that want to share your day with you will. The ones that think it is an issue and don't come , be o.k with it. Maybe you will even get rid of the rif raf that you 'HAD' to invite like long lost aunt sally you never speak to. Or that work assiocate that you felt obilgated to have.

The only guest that mattersto show is your VIP guest your FH

one more thing.. LOVE LOVE LOVE the transportation idea. I did this.

I say go with whatever YOU want! You cant accomodate everyone. I have 100 guests from OOT for me, and all of FH's are local. I did everything I could to get hotel rooms blocked and figure out shuttles, but you can't please everyone. At the end of the day, they WILL come no matter where it is. They shouldnt complain because people fly from all over to attend a wedding! Go for it!

Amen.

Just block some hotel rooms that are close to the LIE or Sunrise Hwy. When you get complaints, just say 'We'll miss you!'
One couple drove 8 hours to come to my wedding (she was a friend from grad school that I hadn't seen since her wedding 5 years ago), and some people that live in the same town just couldn't be bothered to show up. It's your wedding, you're calling the shots here.

Renting a bus is a great idea. Since members of your family won't have to drive, esp if they want to drink at your wedding.

a suggestion... you might want to block off rooms at a nearby hotel, so that your family has accommodations to stay there overnight before or after the wedding.
