Is 2 hour drive too far for my guests?

Is 2 hour drive too far for my guests?

Is it too much to ask my family who lives in Brooklyn,NY to drive to North Fork area on the day of my wedding?

According to google maps:
81.4 mi – about 1 hour 39 mins
up to 2 hours 0 mins in traffic

What do you guys think about getting a bus or two or three?

--

okay, buses then, so what do I do with those family that refuse anything extra I try to do for them? Do I just require they use the bus?

For immediate friends, family and BP, definitely get buses. Just think about how tired they will be at the end of the wedding and still having to drive home. People may not come and/or leave early.

I am worried that driving 45 mins. is too far!

It would be a long day for everyone if its that far away. My friend just went to a wedding that was an hour away and all she kept saying about it is its sooooo far.
I asked her how it was and she said great but soooo far away.

If your in love with the place and cant find anything closer do what you want its your day and those that really care for you will come

just think about everyone drinking and having to sit on a bus to get home after the wedding. would you wanna do that??
good luck

It depends. Is all of yours and DH's family from Brooklyn? Is the RH so amazing that it makes a much better choice for you and DH than any other place in brooklyn?

You will be more apt to get more guests if it is local. Is it an afternoon wedding, some people would probably be willing to drive home from an afternoon wedding than a night wedding. Good Luck with the planning!

I think the idea of a bus is really nice. Also, some of the guests might think of staying at a nearly hotel. The North Fork can be really beautiful in the fall!

I'm having the same thoughts/dilema but you know what I've traveled many times to weddings even paying tolls so if they care they'll do it! If you love the place go for it!

Our family is going to have to travel a little over an hour... so we r getting an extra party bus to take close family there and back!

its long to me, so i would definitely suggest the buses as well as finding an affordable hotel near the RH so guests doing have to drive home

just so I am understanding this...you want to rent buses to take your guests from wherever to the North Fork? Will they also bring them all back to where they were picked up?

What if you gave your out of town guests/as well as locals the option of booking a hotel near your venue? It gives them the option of making the drive or staying the night? We booked rooms at our hotel in Westbury and gave the suffolk guests the option to stay there also, some of them did and some of them opted to go home at the end of the night.

Alot of our guests had over and hour drive home afterwards...they still came, still enjoyed themselves and still stayed the whole night. If people leave early they would have left early regardless of a 10 minute drive...or a 2hour drive.

If you love the venue and by no means can find something closer that you love then go for it. The people closest to you will come no matter waht

I say go with whatever YOU want! You cant accomodate everyone. I have 100 guests from OOT for me, and all of FH's are local. I did everything I could to get hotel rooms blocked and figure out shuttles, but you can't please everyone. At the end of the day, they WILL come no matter where it is. They shouldnt complain because people fly from all over to attend a wedding! Go for it!

No, I don't think it's too far so long as it's a reasonable distance between the ceremony and the reception (if at different places).

I think it's too far. I tried to keep mine down to no more than 1 hour

it depends what type of family you have....

we live in staten island and so does a lot of our immediate family and we are getting married at Jericho Terrace - its about a 40 minute ride from us without traffic.....

people on my side of the family were complaining from day one....

the people are my FHs side of the family are thrilled and could care less that its 40 minutes away

so i really think it depends on the type of people you have in your family.....my attitude is that if 40 minutes is too far for you, then fine, dont come

we are blocking hotel rooms for our guests that want to stay over (my FH's sister also got married at JT and the majority of FH's family stayed over, as well as friends) and we are also going to provide transportation from the hotel to the RH so that all of the guests who are staying over don't have to drink and drive - i think that its the right thing to do.....

I would suggest blocking rooms first-- give them that option, but that is very nice of you to offer busing.. if you could I would say to an AM reception, that way it gives guests time to get home at a reasonable hour-- and traffic to the hamptons is still pretty bad that that time of year-- where on the NF are you getting married? that makes a big difference too... because there is sooo muich north fork to travel

You could def. do the bus pick up and drop off or you can do a hotel near by for guests to stay at, I would think that most would do that? I know any wedding that was an hour away we always stayed at the hotel.

HA HA my wedding is pretty much inconvient for everyone....but there really wasn't a central location to have the wedding accept for right in NYC. But i wasn't about to take a taxi to my wedding...ha ha...just seems odd to me?

Honestly, since i come from a large family and myself & my FH both have a lot of friends...we are actually hoping it will cut our list a little bit. If my close friends and family are there, that's all i need!

Our wedding is 5 hrs from my parents (we do have a house of there), 3 hrs from me & my friends, 4hrs from my FIL, 6hrs from my friends in Boston but it is close to my extended family but everyone is excited about the location and it has meaning to us...so we went with it.

I love the weekend wedding idea!

I had something very similar.

Most of my guests were from Bklyn and I had my wedding in LI.

We provided two big luxury buses for guest that picked them up in bklyn and brought them to the wedding.

I also had a van pick up guests from the city.

After the wedding, I had a few ppl (about 2ppl) say things about the distance they had to travel and I really didn't care to hear it. I found Flowerfield to be the perfect location for my wedding and if they thought it was too far for them - they could have stayed home. I think that people that say anything negative to the bride about any aspect of her wedding are tacky and rude. You do what you want and those that really care about you and FH will show up with smiles on their faces.

see if Hampton Jitney will do it. they travel to the east end all the time, all year round. It is a bit of a distance. I think you should have a block of rooms for the guests that choose to stay. You will also need a shuttle for them to get from church to RH and back to hotel if you use bus out there. Also a return bus that day and the next. I am not sure if there any big hotels out there. I think they tend to be smaller and more costly. You will def. need to book soon though. we have a wedding in tarrytown over the summer, although it is a big drive, we are going.

Re: Is 2 hour drive too far for my guests?

It's been interesting to read the responses. I'm in the DC area, and weddings here can take place anywhere: in the city itself, in central or southern VA, in western VA horse country, on the Eastern Shore of MD or VA, etc. Two hours is far for people in our area, but it's not unexpected and the guests do not expect a bus. I am surprised that in the NY area, where people travel equally far (in time and distance) on a daily basis for work, would expect a bus to go to a one-time event like a wedding. I agree that a block of rooms is a good idea.

You're so right! I have over a 2hr round trip commute everyday. I'm so not stressing over the travel thing now, I'll offer a bus, I'll block rooms.

Now, how do I stop it from raining on my day?
