So FH and I have been stuck on the idea of doing three songs of 3 different genres in our first dance. We really want the dance to capture us as a couple and our cultures, and I feel like these three songs do that.
We are dancing a little bit over 2 minutes of each song, adding up to about 7 minutes. Do you guys think that's too much? We having the routine choreographed ( we start lessons next week) so I was thinking that even though it would be long, it be interesting as we switch from slow, to a little faster, fast, with new moves that we have never done before.
We are dancing to Sade 'by your side' then a bachata, and then a salsa. What do you think?
***UPDATE: Thanks all for sharing your opinions! FH and I went back last night and listened to the songs again. We considered many of the options some of you shared and decided to keep all three songs in the routine, but we cut it down from 7 minutes to 5. This is what we have envisioned doing for a long time and whoever can't handle 5 minutes tough! Our first dance is about us two anyway! Thanks again girls!

i think 7 minutes is long for a first dance ... maybe you can do one minute from each song?

It does seem a bit long, but since they are different tempos and you will be switching up the dancing, I'm sure it will be okay and keep your guests' interest.

Yes. Flat out, yes. Sit down and watch the clock for 7 minutes, and then decide what you think. But when you're up dancing in front of everyone, it's going to feel like FOREVER. I used to be a dancer, and our routines were no longer than 3 minutes......and even that felt like a long time.

GREAT IDEA!!! I LOOOOOVVVE IT!!! Me and FH are going to do a slow love song and then a merengue song. I was actually going to try to find two songs that wouldn't exceed 5minutes (that's for two songs). Honestly, if it goes over 5minutes I wouldn't really make a big deal about it.
I think 7 minutes is fine. It's not like you are dancing one sllllooooooowwww song that's 7minutes. I think it's perfect. Each dance is different. Where are you doing dance lessons?

What about 1 min or 1 and half of 1st to and than the beginning of the 3rd but after about a haldf min invite everyone to join. Or 1st dance you and groom, second add BP and 3rd parents than everyone.

I only looked Manhattan because that was the most convenient for us and I found two different locations for a great price. We ended up going with a studio called candela in the washington heights area because my mother lives close by. Let me know if you need more info.

I think 7 minutes is a lot... also consider your guests stand during your first dance often surrounding the dance floor they are going to want to sit, get a drink, start their app which will probably be sitting at their place setting...
I would def cut it down. It is a great idea though. What if you do a tradtional first dance, then later in the night. mix it up clear the dance floor and bust out your fun moves?

I agree. 7 minutes of straight dancing is going to be exhausting! I think it's nice to learn a dance, but you're not supposed to be the entertainment at your own wedding.
I'd make the decision one you've started learning the dances and see how you feel... but 7 minutes is LOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGG.

After the first part of the song, you could always invite others out to the dance floor to dance with you so its not like everyone is just standing there for 7 mins.

Although I dont think watching us dance would be equivalent to watching the clock, I dont want people to start thinking, when will this dance be over??? we may have to go back and see if we can make the songs shorter... We are doing rumba for the Sade song so I really wanted to do some cool moves... decisions decisons!!!!!!

To be honest, yes, I'd be thinking to myself when will it be over (and I love salsa/bachata). What about the first dance song and an updbeat salsa to get the party started. The DJ can ask people to join in. It'll be a good way to get ppl on the dancefloor.
Maybe the 2 of you can do the bachata after something, the cake? ..and do the same, ask people to join in after a while.

Re: Is 7 minutes too long?
I def think it's a little long. Before you make any decisions I would also talk to your DJ or Band. Typically the Matre'd tells them how many minutes they have left to play. That doesn't mean that in every hall they have the chance of cutting songs short, but if it's longer then normal it might run into other formailites.

Try to find a song that would allow you to incorporate different dances. That is what we did for our first dance.

Waaaaaaay too long. It doesn't matter how good you are at dancing, people are going to get bored and antsy.
