Is a MOH a must? Can you just have bridesmaids?

So I asked my sister to be my MOH because my Mom said, “Oh your sister has to be your MOH. You only have one.” But my sister is mentally and verbally abusive. When we talk about anything (wedding related or not) and disagree, she’s like I don’t want to be in your wedding. I really don’t want someone unreliable in such an important positive.
Over time I tend to fall in and out of friendships. I did have a friend whom I felt close with but when I asked her to be a bridesmaid she said no. I was her but it is what it is. So I’m thinking of asking a male friend to sign as a witness. But would it be tacky not to have a MOH?

Not at all. Its your wedding you should do what you want. Also you dont want to look back in 10 years and say 'oh my MOH was so and so' and realize that you chose them because you felt like you HAD to.

I agree. You need to do what you feel is right. Being a maid of honor is a lot of work, but it is also an HONOR. You don't need someone bringing you down.

Is a MOH a must? Can you just have bridesmaids?

I have decided to not have MOH and have all three of my friends be bridesmaids. They are all equally close to me and i would hate to offend one by asking another.

I dont know how many bridesmaids your having but you can dress them in different dresses of the same color, no one will know if there is or isnt a MOH.

Best of Luck.

The only purpose of a maid of honor is to serve as your witness.

I am not having a MOH. My brother will be my witness. He's my man of honor.

2014 bride crashing. My FH and I decided not to have a MOH and best man because it was too hard for us to choose only one person. We are having my FSIL, FH's cousin, my brother, and FH's brother in law.

I am not having a maid of honor, and FH isn't having a best man. My sister is also unreliable - yet asked if she could be MOH, and I said we weren't doing that but, would she be one of the bridesmaids. It would be stressful to have someone unreliable as MOH. I like just having a bridal party, no MOH.

Is a MOH a must? Can you just have bridesmaids?

I'm happy to hear other people are doing this too - I have 4 close friends as BMs and no maid of honor. My FH kind of chose by default his oldest brother to be best man but he is equally close to two brothers. I'm also not having a MOH because one of my brothers is signing as my witness also. Sometimes when I meet with vendors they get flustered that there is no MOH and I'm pretty adamant that we treat all 4 as Bridesmaids, no one of them is doing more than the others! I guess it's still kind of weird to people when we go out of the box for things but I think it's perfectly fine!
