I've been living in an apartment on my own for about 6 years now. My fiance moved in just over a year before we got engaged. He's a chef and I'm a foodie. We both love to cook and I've fully outfit my kitchen with every appliance and gadget I could possibly need for the little space I have. We don't plan on moving into a house for a while, and there isn't anything I really need or want in terms of housewares. Is it really absolutely necessary to set up a wedding registry? The only thing we don't have that we would eventually want is china, silverware and stemware.....but we don't have anywhere to put it. I was hoping to avoid a registry so people would be 'forced' to give us money, since that's what we could really use. Is this tacky?

I would set up a registry for things you may need like new linens etc. If people want to give a gift instead of $$$ they are going to if you register or not.

I agree. Not to sound ungrateful for any gift, but I'd set up a small registry for new towels, linens, etc, things you will eventually need to replace bc you may otherwise wind up with a lot of picture frames, vases, decorative stuff or doubles and triples of stuff you already have.

If you dont have a registry, people who are going to buy gifts will buy you something regardless. especially if you have a bridal shower. So that being said, set up a registry at BBB and if you get some things you decide you dont want, you can return them for cash.
Is there anything you already ahve that maybe could be replaces with something new? Maybe new bath towels, or sheets? Could you use a few more serving platters? If you register for china, could you keep them ina china storage case and put that somewhere?

I'm not having an engagement party and I've already told my mother I don't want a shower. There really just isn't anything that I need people to buy me. Most of our family & friends are from NY, so I thought we would just get money. Maybe I'm wrong. Guess it's a good thing I'm asking this forum. :)

I don't think the returning at BBB for cash is longer applicable.

If you're not having a shower, then I don't see a need to register, but if your mom does throw you one, I would.

I thought the same way you do because I have been living on my own for a long time and have all of the necessary items. However, you don't realize all of the stuff you don't have or would like 'new' of...for example, I would like a new vacuum. Also...China, Flatware and Stemware are expensive and if you ever see yourself down the line hosting holidays or gatherings you will want this stuff. I also registered for some outdoor stuff since we just bought a house and needed those types of things. If you are having a shower....even a small one, then register. If you are having a lot of people that live in other states being invited to the wedding but don't think they will make it...having a registry is a good option for them. You can include the registry card in their invitations. This is just my opinion...in the end you have to figure out what is best for you.

Re: Is A Registry Necessary?
FH and I have been living together for 2 years and just bought, furnished and decorated a house this past summer. But we registered for things we wanted new of. New everyday dinnerware, a new coffee maker, new george forman grill, sheets, towels, table linens, etc. I also registered for formal china and crystal stemware because I plan to host holidays in the future.
I was considering a Honeymoon registry for the same reasons. We've lived together for a while and I cook alot and have every appliance, etc. So...if you're interested in it, go to a travel agent like Liberty Travel or your reg one. Most agents set you up with escrow...you get 100% of the money donated as long as you book your honeymoon with them. its like they are giving you cash and they will be paying for a great part of the wedding. I'm sure people will totally understand since you both live together. It just makes sense. If you register for linens or replacement appliances, slip in the honeymoon regsitry as well. Just don't add too much to the other registries. HTH

Re: Is A Registry Necessary?
Me too!!! we have too much clutter in our apartment already. we don't want another toaster oven or anything. We do however need some cash for our honeymoon.
Can't guests just give us checks??? Honeymoon registry takes 7% as their fee so I might want to simply collect the day of the wedding.
