I've been a vegetarian since I was 14. I just decided I didn't want to eat animals. It was challenging at first , finding things to eat and giving up favorites, but now I'm a pro and finding things and meat is about as much like food to me as plastic is,.

I've been one since the age of 12.
I became one because I started to get involved in the animal rights movement, and could no longer differentiate between a cow used for the sake of meat or my pet cats.
I also don't wear animal skin, use products tested on animals, and buy my dairy products from companies where the cows are actually given a FARM to live on.
For me, it's a little more extreme. I've gone vegan before.
FH is also a vegetarian for compassionate reasons. We're planning a vegetarian wedding.
I can answer a lot of questions for you if you're thinking of making a switch or cutting down on the amount of meat that you eat.
ETA: I just saw your question about if it was hard. For me, it was not. It was a choice based on what I felt was right or wrong. I was only 12 at the time (which means I've been one for 16+ years!) and my mom told me that a) the kitchen was not a restaurant and I'd have to learn to cook my own food and b) I needed to go to the pediatrician and talk with him about how it would affect my health. Within a week or so, I had gone to the library and taken out veggie cookbooks (there were like...three...so sad) and saw my doctor. I gave it up cold turkey, no pun intended!

I have been on and off since I was a kid and officially since last summer. When I was younger it was because I loved animals. I kept cutting out different types of meat! In the last year I just can't stomach the thought of most meat or dairy products.
I have been eating small amounts of meat, dairy and fish as a New Years Resolution since my Reproductive Endocrinologist recommended it but it's really just not my thing.
I've found tasty substitutes for pretty much everything other than shrimp and sushi. FM me for my substitution list.

It's totally true.
We are a strange breed.
I, for one, have never met a normal vegan. And when I go on vegan kicks, I realize why. It makes you effing nuts!

I used to be a vegetarian where I didn't even wear leather. I still don't eat pork, veal, or lobsters though I still would be a veg though if my FH was, its easier when you have someone doing it with you.

love you too, barb. but i eat fish, so maybe i dont count. lol
as for the OP, i gave up red meat when i was 15. mainly because i didnt like it much. lol. then i found myself seriously overdosing on chicken. i looovveed chicken...but i was having it at least 6 times a week, and most of those were processed meals. so i knew it wasnt too healthy. so when i was 19 i gave up chicken for lent....realized it wasnt that bad...and i never looked back
