Is anyone else getting totally screwed with Nassau's SECOND tax re-assessment?
My mother has a nice modest house on the North Shore and was reassessed last year at what I guess is a reasonable price. But then she received a second assessment earlier this month and the price rose $250K!!! It's now well over $850K for a 3 bdrm cape!!!
I'm sorry - that's insane for her house and size of property. The first round seemed reasonable given the location and all, but this second one is way over the top.
Her whole area is getting together and hiring a lawyer to fight the battle.
I feel so bad for her - she's a single lady who is about to retire - she doesn't need these headaches

Teri - I agree. Our first assessment was a year after we purchased our house and the price was almost double what we paid. Our second one appraised it even higher, which is just nuts (I would never pay that kind of money for my house ). However, I can say that our taxes for some reson went down $200 since the last assessment. Something is screwy with this whole thing and I just can't figure it out.

I believe it's because they are changing the figure they use to assess the house with. It used to be a portion of the value, now they are using the actual value but the way the taxes are applied is different. Trish our house value went up also and our taxes when down too.
The county also sent out a form to argue the assessment if you felt that is was incorrect. If you want to fight it you have to return the form to the county. We aren't fighting since our taxes decreased.

yeah, my mom's definitely INCREASED another few thousand dollars.
Trish - that's what kills me. There's no way my mom could sell her house for $800K - no way. So to be assessed at that price in such a great selling market makes you wonder how off the whole system is
That's great that both of your taxes went down!

Teri, Trish and I live only a few blocks away from each other (in different towns though), so it's possible that it's our area was assessed too high. I'm so sorry about your Mom's going up. It's ridiculous.

There was an article about this in yesterday's Newsday. The Assessor's office is saying that they are getting deluged with calls, etc. and that people don't realize how much the real estate market has increased. But then on the flip side it showed this woman who had to cash in her bonds to cover her increased property tax in Rockville Center, and can't afford to move anywhere else. These assessments are really scary and so random!

From what my mom has told me and what I've heard from others, this just seems to be such a half@$$ed plan to recoup some of the money lost by idiots running the county for the past 10+ years.
I really don't agree with the market increasing that much in certain areas (my mom's with $250K!) within 1 year - it's just not possible! We've been house hunting for a while and are very familiar with what houses go for in certain areas - there is NO way anyone would pay $800+ for my mom's house - just no way.
It's so frustrating to be at the mercy of a group who you don't have much confidence in....then I'm starting to wonder about the future...we're currently looking to buy in Nassau, but do we still want to, wondering if this will continue to happen every few years?

Re: Is anyone else getting totally screwed with Nassau's SECOND tax re-assessment?
The problem was created years and years ago when property was being incorrectly assessed and way undervalued. So for years some people were paying too much and others paying too little. My assessment is pretty close to correct so I can't complain, but it sounds like a lot of them are way too high. I have a feeling that it will be redone again due to the high number of obvious mistakes! They need to get someone who lives in Nassau to do these..that way they know what the actual value should be!
