Is anyone else house hunting while planning too?

All,

Just wanted to know if there is anyone else out there househunting while also making all your plans.

house hunting, job hunting, relocating....

My husband and I are planning a move to AZ, but we only have one friend there. We agree with you about the housing and taxes. If it's not too much trouble, could you e-mail me? I would like to ask you if you are familiar with the town we are looking in and what areas you are considering. I don't think this kind of info is appropriate for this board. Thanks.

Did it last year

I have to honestly say, I would gladly plan a wedding before going through the purchase of a house!!

We bought our house just about a year ago, and the stress was tremendous. When you buy a house, it just seems like there is so much more out of your control than in planning a wedding.

We have the same plan!

We're getting married Oct. 01 and doing the same thing...looking in the late spring! We aren't sure where we want to live which makes it so exciting! I'm in the real estate business in Manhattan, but Long Island is where we're probably headed! Where are you looking?

Just wanted to know if there is anyone else out there househunting while also making all your plans.

I was in the same boat Kim. Our wedding is in September and we began house hunting last October. Fortunately we found something we loved but we can't close on it til August because the owner is waiting for his house to be built! So we are probably going to be going crazy in the few months up to the wedding!
Good luck out there. Only suggestion I would make is that if you can start looking earlier you may be better off. Prices tend to go up in Spring since there are more house hunters out there.

Misha, thanks for the advice. I would love to start looking now but we are in the process of trying to reduce our debt 'just a little bit more' so are going to wait until May to apply for the preapproval and start looking in June. Unfortunately you are right and the prices will be a bit higher than the winter, but hopefully the new lower interest rate will balance things out.

Good luck with your house though .. I am glad you found the home of your dreams! (and just in time for your wedding too!)

Jenn, Congratulations, that is great! Good luck with everything.

On another note, did you ever find out when the 'Inn at Fox Hollow' was opening? My wedding is there in Oct and would be perfect for those guests who wanted to stay over.

Kathi, We both have lived on Long Island all our lives and plan on staying in close proximity to our families that are both here.

I grew up on the South Shore in N Bellmore and now live on the North Shore in Oyster Bay. We are both partial to the south shore so we plan on looking in West Islip, where my fiance has always lived. It's Suffolk Cty so the taxes are slightly more reasonable and close to the water which we love.

Although LI is expensive, our jobs and families are here so there is no other place we'd want to be. I guess I am just starting to stress thinking about all the money we will be paying out in the next few months between the wedding and the closing, house, etc. I think it hit me more because I just got a letter asking for more money from our catering hall AND photographer in the same day ... there goes another $3K!

Jenn, Thanks. The planning is going well, everything is done except for us still having to get the officiant to perform the ceremony and I have to start looking for a gown. The invitations we will do in March as well as taking a trip out to the Mikasa warehouse in NJ for favors.

I started the 'wedding diet' and want to wait until the end of this month to start looking :) Did you order your gown yet? If so, where did you end up getting it? I think based on what I've heard I am going to check out Lillette's in Baldwin and Adrienne's in Islip. I was going to go to David's but am hearing bad things about their alterations.

Did you find a flowergirls dress for your daughter yet?

For Kathi .. another October bride :)

Our wedding is the day before, October 6, 2001! How is the rest of your planning going? I haven't started looking for a gown yet but will start at the end of this month. I think that is the only thing that I feel a bit behind on. (I also need a makeup person but worst case I will do it myself :)

As for towns to look in, if you want you can send me an email at '[email protected].' I also found some great information at 'newsday.com' in the real estate section .. they have information recent sales of houses in all areas, as well as information on different towns as well as school district testing scores. But I can give you ideas of where you might want to look or stay away from.

In your case I would probably stick to Nassau County given the location of where you both work. Suffolk has its advantages but if you have to commute into the city, I personally wouldn't want over a 45 minute commute on the LIRR.

Kim...I e-mailed you some info :) *NM*

Check homeadvisor.msn.com...

Future Homeowners: (Oh, and Brides-to-Be)

This site is very helpful. It allows you to see what homes in your area of interest sold for. It's important to have comparables when you're buying. Most real estate brokers are not very forthcoming with this information. ALWAYS ask for recent comps!

Thanks, Kim...more

My FI lived in N. Bellmore up until he moved in w/ me in October!! I really don't know where we should look - I wouldn't mind Suffolk Co. but I might mind the commute. I work in Manhattan and Steve works in Brooklyn!

Jenn, looks like you are a couple steps ahead of me :) I'll catch up soon I hope.

We want to do Mikasa picture frames that are priced 5.99 in the outlets here. Since I need 70 of them I thought there would be some kind of discount, but there isn't .. I would have to pay $350+ to buy them from the Bellport Outlet, Riverhead Outlet and even the one in Woodbury Commons. The same frame though, is 3.99 in the warehouse in NJ ... I figured we'd make a day out of shopping at the outlets and save $140 at the same time for my favors :)

For Jenn

Jenn, I have hit a lull too, aside from the gown hunting that will start in a few weeks. I think we would probably be told by others that we should enjoy this lull because in a couple of months we would wish we had it!

They say the 2 or so months before get crazy .. then add a house on top of it! :)
