Is anyone having a hard time. . . . .

Original post by suzie411

with the idea of changing your last name???!?!

I just don't get it! I mean, I get it. You're becoming one unit and yada yada yada. But it's my name! My identity all my life.

I love my name! And my FH will be really insulted if I didn't change it (although I don't see how that's fair).

so frustrating!

Can't wait to change my name to FH's! I love his name and how it sounds with mine.
Maybe if I was very established in my career with my last name, I'd have more of an issue but sadly, that is not the case

it doesn't bother me...i mean even though I've been one person my whole life, after we get married I will essentially be a new person....I will be a wife with my own family to start as well as being part of my other family.

in fact I'm excited...it makes us an official family!

plus i wouldnt want my kids to have a hypehnated name or different name

i feel exactly the same way.

My FH actually doesn't care whether i change it or not...
I am going to hyphenate it becuase if i translate it to English my last name will be the Cross of Jesus Christ. ha! and i think its actually funny.

I have a couple issues with the name changing situation
1.) I going from a 6 letter name that is constantly spelled wrong, to a TEN letter name is constantly spelled wrong and PRONOUNCED wrong.

2.) I will be in the first semester of my program (hopefully) in school when I get married- I foresee ALOT of paperwork and confusion if I try to change it during the program....but FH doesn't want me to wait the 2 years until I am done with school to change it

nope, i love FH's last name! and i've never been a fan of mine-ppl can never pronounce it (even though I think it is so simple).

the only problem i'm having is how to write my new signature? lol...i'm not good at writing capital script 'S's!

I want to hyphenate but I think FI wants me to change it completely. My mom recently died, there are no male children so if I change the name if feel like a huge part of my identity goes. I joked with FI that I wanted our kids to also have the hyphenated me, he looked at me like i was crazy.

I'm in the same boat. FH's last name is Smith I feel like being Mrs Smith is so generic. Plus my last name is MY name, why should I change it? FH wants me to hyphenate, but I'd rather just keep mine. I'm guessing in the end he will win this battle

As a scientist, are you worried about changing your name? I keep threatening FH that if I publish before the wedding, I'm keeping my name. He just says that I should publish in my future name. Oy.

YESSSS. I already have a bunch of papers published under MY name, which is another big reason I don't want to change it. And if we do change it in science, it will definitely have to be hyphenated so that people know the work was ours. SO annoying! I have a friend from grad school who changed her name after her wedding and just hyphenates it on her papers now. Its just a pain in the butt.

i am in the same boat... it drives me nuts that i will have to hyphenate professionally and then just have his name personally- i think it will get confusing and annoying

I think it's funny: I'm sure all our FH would look at us like we're crazy hearing all the back and forth's about changing out names.... but think about it... would they change theirs? No

I have no problem changing it...but if i did he would be so upset.....

you do what you need to do ....be honest with him...

I can't wait to talk FH's name. I have my father's last name and honestly that means nothing to me. FH last name has more meaning to me than my own father's.

NOPE!!! I like my last name b/c it is cute- but I have no relationship with my dad. My sister was married when she passed , my brother changed is name to Barrett (my moms maiden name), and my mom is changing her name to her maiden name once I am married soooooo I am fine with it.
