DH's friends are having a traditional Chinese wedding in a few months & I have a really nice red dress that I was thinking of wearing.. Is this color appropriate to wear as a guest?
For a traditional chinese wedding, guest should not wear red. Red is for the bride only in a chinese wedding, even for not so traditional ones, esp the really bright red color.
I agree with the above poster. Wearing red to a chinese wedding is like wearing white to an american wedding. Red is for the bride ONLY.

You might be better off not wearing red since it is customary for the bride to wear red. Even though today most chinese brides will wear a white wedding gown, but will change into a red chinese gown afterwards. It would be like wearing white to someone else wedding.
