Is anyone keeping their last name?

Does anyone know if you hyphenate, can you legally sign either name, or do you always have to sign your hyphenated last name?? I have to keep my last name for professional purposes, but want to share his name because we want to start a family. Thanks for any info!

supposedly you can do both legally but not on very important such as mortgage, etc.

after reading all about it online, i caved and decided instead of hyphenating, we will keep my last name ( i am the only one who would carry, she has 4 brothers). seems like a PAIN to hyphenate with medical forms, etc etc

His is long and hard to pronounce so I am keeping mine for work (I work in a school and the kids definitely wont be able to pronounce it) but changing it everywhere else

Me too. I'm tired of people pronouncing it wrong or completely botching it. My parents had 5 girls and no sons, but luckily my oldest nephew will continue my dad's namesake. He has a simple, easy last name that i'll be glad to take and i definitely want to have the same last name as my children. His mother got divorced when they were very young and she kept her married name for that reason... when FH's brother get's married there will be 3 Mrs. Woodwards haha.

I worked very hard to become Dr. Regina and i feel it would be a disrespect to MY family if I change it....so socially, Sure call me Mrs. Mahoney....but I will always be Dr. Regina and don't plan on changing anything legally.

I'm changing, but not sure how to handle professionally. It's such a hassle to change everything from email name to all the HR stuff. Plus people will be confused for quite awhile. In my business, a lot if newly married girls end up writing 'Karin X, formerly Y' for a period of time. Guess I might do that.

i'm taking his name....it's a pain having to change my medical license, passport, etc.. but i am going to be his wife! it's worth the hassle. i don't want to keep my old name, i want to bear his :)

I'm keeping my name. Our last names are too long to hyphenate, otherwise I would (also everyone misspells BOTH our names all the time). I can't imagine not having my last name anymore and he understands.

I'm going from a shorter last name to a longer last name. I really struggled with whether or not to change it, but decided that if I wanted to really be a family with him, we'd need to all have the same name. Me, him and the future kids.

I think that's a great idea! I would hyphenate but I was never a fan of my last name and kind of can't wait to change it ! Especially because FHs last name sounds nice :)

it seems to be a trend now to keep the maiden name and hyphen with new name, but to me its a gift to my FH to take his last name and his only...

I agree! I feel like if you are 2 becoming 1...why shouldn't the name go with it?

We've discussed this actually FH, says its up to me.
I will be hyphenating.
Socially, I will use his and my future children as well.
Funny thing his name much nicer than mine, it's just very important to me not to lose my past. Made me who I am today. And I'm proud of what I've become.
My views might change once I start my own family. Idk lol
Only thing I hate is now ill need a new signature. Medical world we sign a lot of legal documents, so being unique but easy, very important!
