Is anyone up?? - Sorry Long vent.......UPDATE below

I can't sleep. My wedding is one week away from today. I'd like to say I can't sleep because I'm so excited, but it's more because I'm stressed and nervous. I still have a bunch of stuff to do, but that's not what's got me all worked up.
My parents are divorced and my father who is pretty much always a source of grief told me suddenly last weekend he couldn't come to the wedding because he didn't have money due to some crap with his job (as usual), so I offer to PAY for him to come to my wedding... when he should actually be giving us a gift! This includes tux rental, hotel, gas and tolls from upstate NY. So whatever, it's important to me that he's there so I will give him the money he needs to be there. However it seems that his main concern was getting money so he could start an LLC and also so he could pay rent to his on again off again crazy girlfriend so she doesn't kick him out. I told him I can only give him money toward the wedding. And he supposedly was fine with that. I shouldn't have to SUPPORT my screwed up father!
SO last night he calls me and we talk for about 20 minutes. He tells me he will definitely be at the wedding no matter what and that he will get the name and number of his tuxedo place so I can call and pay for his tux. The conversation ended well, however he still wasn't sure if he was going to be getting kicked out of his place by his girlfriend, which means he would be living out of his car for who knows how long. He has lived out of his car before. My dad is an alcoholic among other problems . I am NOT offering for him to come live with me because FH and I do not want to open that door. My dad will just abuse it. He's shown up in my sister's driveway in the middle of the night with no place to go before. I love him, but he's just a huge heartache and headache.
Anyway, so we hang up, things are fine. Less than 5 minutes later he calls me back acting all weird and says, you don't have to spend a dime on me, I'm not gonna wear a tux I'll just come in my old suit. So I said dad, I don't mind renting your tux for you, I want you in a tux, you are the father of the bride and it's the appropriate attire and I want you to look your best. Everyone else in the wedding party is wearing a tux. (plus God knows what this suit looks like).
So he starts in with the mind game, Well if I'm not good enough for you in my suit then that's just too bad and I won't come, I'm not getting the tux. Totally calm (because I've been through this crap with him before) I said, what just happened in the past 5 minutes? Everything was fine, now you are changing your tune, I'm gonna hang up and talk to you tomorrow because this conversation isn't gonna go anywhere tonight. And then HE hangs up on ME.
Him wearing a tux has NOTHING to do with not accepting him the way he is. Geez, all of my siblings and I have always accepted him the way he is, which is a pretty crappy and grief causing person most of the time. Most people who have gone through what we've gone through with him would have said 'screw you dad' long ago.
I'm just so ticked off, upset, and saddened by this whole thing. I fell asleep crying last night AGAIN. I am trying to help him because it's important to me that he's at the wedding but he's just making it more and more difficult. He is so selfish. He has no idea what I am going through right now, how much money we are laying out, how much stress I'm under. All he can think about is himself and 'poor me' and give me guilt trips and head games. I want to ENJOY the last week before my wedding and I feel I can't even do that because I'm worrying about HIM!!!!
I just needed to vent

i am sorry you have to go thru this. it sounds like you know your dad and his behavioral problems very well, and like you know how to handle this situation. hopefully your dad will be able to get over himself a little, get the tux and come to the wedding. i am praying for you.

I'm sorry about your father, you sound like you are very patient with him. My father was an alcoholic too, but he was also VERY abusive to my mother and sister, so I don't talk to him anymore, and now he seems to realize that he screwed up. TOO LATE. I'm sure someday your father will look back and wish he hadn't acted this way right before your wedding. I hope everything works out for you, and I hope someday he can help himself. I think it is a good idea that you are not inviting him to live with you, because that would most likely put a huge strain on your marriage. Try not to feel bad, you sound very kind and it is NOT your fault that he is an alcoholic. You can not do anything to help him until he wants to be helped. I hope everything works out, and you have a beautiful wedding day

This may sound horrible but there is nothing more you can do. It is up to him if he comes or not. You need to focus on you, your fh and the wedding. Since he doesn't seem to care if he is at the wedding or not take the money you were spending on him to be there and have a day at the spa. It won't solve any problems but will help you feel better if only for a couple hours. Your dad has an illness and can not be helped till he helps himself. Don't let him pull you down with him. Good luck and lot's of hugs

Thanks to ALL you girls for your encouragement and support, you're so sweet.

dplehat - you're totally right, this is what FH has been telling me all along. I am turning a page today, my sisters are here to help put together my favors and we're gonna have fun despite my dad's crap. I am gonna focus on the happiness of my day and if he shows up good, if not, oh well, there is nothing I can do about it.

Re: Is anyone up?? - Sorry Long vent.......

hi there - i just read your post and my heart broke.

First, you deserve massive kudos for being so smart and mature about the whole situation. I'm really impressed reading what you wrote. You seem like the 'adult' in the situation - which is hard to do when you're dealing with your own parent.

Second, my best friend is going through this with her father. Very similar situation. He is a very selfish man and only cares about her when its convenient for him. She recently went to a psychologist and he told her that she should set boundaries for him. She now takes his calls and emails when SHE wants to and determines whether or not she wants him in her life.

I think its really smart for you to say 'no' to him living with you both and I think you have a great head on your shoulders. It seems like men with this kind of personality really don't realize what they are doing to those around them because they are so narcississtic and concerned with themselves.

Your wedding will be beautiful and amazing because you will be surrounded by those who love you and care for you. This is one day where you can't allow your dad to compromise that. Stay strong, and think positive thoughts.

Tons of hugs to you.

So sorry you are going thru this so close to your wedding...your father is not your responsibilty and you are in no way obligated to 'enable' his behavior. That is a huge thing with alcoholics...the disease makes them selfish, bitter & manipulative...have you ever gone to Al-Anon? It may be a great place for you to start and find support with other people in similar situations...as my DOC told me the week of my wedding...this is YOUR TIME TO BE SELFISH...do what is best for you and take care of making yourself happy!! If your Dad makes it, then great...if not then he is missing out...not you.

UPDATE:
Thanks so much ladies! You all have such wonderful advice and are soooooo right!!
I have always felt like I am the adult and my father is the child which is common for children of alcoholics.
Anyway, my dad called yesterday and left me a message saying he was sorry for what he said and that he knows it's important to me that he wears the tux so he's going to wear it. And he will be there no matter what.
Thankfully his girlfriend hasn't kicked him out again (yet) but I found out from my mom yesterday that my mom talked to his girlfriend last week and asked her to please not kick him out this week for my sake. She asked her to just wait until after the wedding. My mom gets along with my dad's girlfriend so I'm so glad my mom said that to her. I really think that's the only reason my dad still has a roof over his head. Anyway, there are still 6 days to the wedding so a lot can change, however I am determined to enjoy the next 6 days no matter what!
NOW I'm getting excited for my wedding day!
