IS bloomberg serious?

Original post by Espo22

Has anyone seen that Bloomberg is trying to get them to extend his term. He said that you should be able to do more than 2 terms. I dont think they would approve this and on top of that they are saying that bloomberg has an announcement to make this afternoon that will change things for NYC, i hope this isnt it

As an NYC teacher, I have no qualms voicing my opinions about Bloomberg. Get him and Joel Klein out of office ASAP. They're both businessmen, NOT educators. They have NO IDEA what our kids need and what our kids are capable of doing.

The night before school began this year, Bloomberg gave a press conference and said he'd support testing Kindergarteners with standardized bubble sheet tests. Can you imagine trying to get a 5-year-old to correctly bubble in multi choice test sheets when they barely know which is their right or left hand or even how to hold a pencil??? My 3rd graders still have difficulty with following directions!

Have you ever seen Bloomberg or Klein on the news in those wonderful photo ops where they're reading a book to a bunch of kids sitting at their feet? They have the book facing themselves, as if they're entertaining themselves with the illustrations, rather than sharing the book with the kids!!

I definitely wouldn't vote Bloomberg in again.

JMHO, don't mean to be harsh, just fed up with this administration.

ETA: I forgot about this.... in June, on the day it hit 99°F, Bloomberg kept our boiling hot classrooms open so he wouldn't inconvenience parents having to pick up their kids. But.... he ordered the horses that lead the hansom cabs to remain in their stables rather than travel around Central Park because it was too hot for them. So, he kept horses cool and comfortable and told the city's children it's ok to bake while trapped inside our city's old school buildings without air conditioning. He got out of his air conditioned limo for all of a second to tell the city's teachers 'suck it up' and deal with it. What about his constituents' kids?? All red in the face, some going to the nurse because of medical conditions made worse by having to sit in the heat for hours on end.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I also am a teacher and i fuc King HATE HIM!! What about when it snowed 26 inches in 2006 and he didnt bother closing the schools. were babysitters dont you know. GET HIM OUT OF OFFICE.

I have many friends that are teachers in the NYC schools (I used to teach there) and they all hate him....he does not care about the schools or the teachers or education AT ALL. Same with Rudy Giuliani a few years back (the mayor who gave himself a $30,000 raise and refused to give teachers a cost of living adjustment). So my opinion is get him out as fast as you can...how dare you even think about running for a third term-what arrogance!!!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course I remember that!!!!!!!! The teachers who live on LI had such difficulty getting into work that most just stayed home. Meanwhile, I lived 5 minutes away so I had no excuse. Had to go in to literally babysit. He said the snowstorm wasn't that bad. Tell that to the teachers who got stuck w/ their cars on ice and snow, who could barely shovel out their cars in front of their own homes, let alone those of us who managed to make it to work on time, only to not find any parking whatsoever because all the families in the neighborhood couldn't be bothered to shovel their own cars out and their sidewalks on the same street as the school.

I'm not a parent yet, so I don't know what it's like to have to leave work in the middle of the day to pick up a child at school. But Bloomberg didn't care that some teachers live in 2-fare zones and rely on the LIRR, or buses that DON'T make certain stops in snowstorms, and then they have no way to get to work. Most local streets around the schools here in my district in Queens are called 'tertiary' streets, meaning they're 3rd down on the list of priority to be plowed. First are main roadways, then cross streets, then the little streets. With that 26' blizzard, it was damn near impossible for me to get to work. I had to leave my car behind and take 2 buses, and I have a bad leg and it took me almost 2 hours to get to a school that's literally 15 minutes away by car. Thank goodness our administration was understanding and appreciated anyone who made the effort to come in.

Im a city teacher also and i couldnt agree more!!

not to extend his term
to let him RUN AGAIN

he would only win if people vote for him again and if people WANT him, then why not??

It's the power of the people

Here's the thing, fundamentally, NYC residents are opposed to unlimited terms, you're going down a slippery slope if you allow it and that's why it's voted against and people still feel strongly about it now. You don't want someone like David Dinkins being able to keep running and running and running and winning, god forbid he has no formidable opponents.

That said, Bloomberg's popularity right now is at it's highest since 2002 and he's done an incredible job with this city. And, none of the other potential candidates right now would even come close to beating him....like it wouldn't even be a contest. Wiener, Thompson, I forget the other one right now.....oh, Quinn.....none of them would be any competition for him.

People are angry he wants to go back on his issue of challenging Giuliani's quest for an additional term ETA: or extension of his term (which in hindsight was the best thing because Giuliani is a crook and was surrounded by crooks, Kerik anyone?) and they don't want to open up the can of unlimited term worms (which I agree with), but if allowed, Bloomberg would be re-elected in a heartbeat and that would be a great thing for this city and what it needs right now.

Agree with you 10000000000 percent

OH, and in terms of the schools comments
I have worked for the DOE for 13 years, as a teacher for 7 and now an AP for 6

NYC Schools DONT close
It is not the parents of NYC's fault that you commute from long island; that is why you have sick days; use them in bad weather

very few kids show up anyway

the last time NYC schools closed was September 12, 2001; obviously the day after 9/11

Do you have any idea the number of children that wouldnt eat breakfast or lunch if schools were closed when it snowed?? We may not want to always admit it, but we are WAY more than simply 'teachers' to these children

In reference to summer school, i have little ones in my building and parents that work in manhattan; it would take them hours to get there anyway - many parents work in jersey, staten island or other boroughs that can take a while to get to - (this goes for snow as well) they cant call 1200 homes to come and get their kids

Teachers are paid $43 an hour for summer school and it is VOLUNTARY; you sign up for it so then you need to expect that quite possibly there will be a heat wave - Thankfully, my building has A/C's in each room; (new this year) but i taught summer school for 6 summers with none - it is what it is

I understand the whole thing that he fought for the 2 year term and now it looks bad that he's going against it but I also think he is one of (if not THE) best mayor we have had in a long time. I would love to see him stick around.

I agree. His track record is also amazing and I feel like he really cares for NYC. I would love for him to have another term if those were the rules.

totally agree

also, it should be up to the residents of NYC to determine what is best for them (us, as i am a resident of queens)

it is easy for teachers to say no, because they dont like the DOE changes, but many of them dont live in NYC

Thank you for making these points Laura. I'm not a teacher so I couldn't comment on what the other teachers were voicing but I'm glad there is another side to the story. It's always good to get the most information we can for these discussions.

I understand the points you made. All good points.

The only thing I do want to add is that most of the kids that attend my school live in close proximity (sp?) to the building. Which means that on horrible blizzard days, I have almost perfect attendance... my whole class shows up, as do most of the other classes. When teachers who live on LI stay home and use their sick days that way, it leaves some classes without teachers, out-of-classroom teachers having to forego their programs to fill in a period here and there, and classes get split up, so teachers not only have their own kids, but also someone else's.

I didn't sign up for summer school. That heat wave was in June, during a regularly scheduled school day.

And yes, I know we're way more than teachers to some of these kids. Some days I don't know whether I'm a teacher, or a psychologist, mediator, defender, friend, confidant, protector, nurse, etc. But it's a sad comment on today's society when some of our children have to depend on meals outside of their own homes because their own families can't or do not provide for them but continue to have more children anyway. Just an observation and JMHO.

that snow storm in 06 i had only 2 of my students absent.. so as for most students being absent.. i have yet to see that on bad weather days.

and if we use our sick days - we have to hear it from admin

I understand its not NYCs fault that we live in LI, but sorry they have to be accomodating at times knowing that many of their teachers etc.. do live on LI.

the heat wave - we had a teacher and students passing out that day and throwing up

and seriously, im tired of these politians that never taught and know nothing about the education system, revamping the education system.

just adding my 2 cents since i had a moment haha

Snowflake08 Posted:

Re: IS bloomberg serious?

It may be sad that we HAVE to feed the children, but it is a fact

I know that the students live near the school
My school is smack dab in the middle of a 32 building housing project where all of my PreK-8 students live

Not saying ALL the kids are out, but YOUR safety comes first so would you rather be in an accident or have your admin a little 'annoyed' that you called in; your choice

However, it is not the responsibility of the city for which you work to worry about HOW you get to work - MANY teachers work outside of the 5 boroughs, but just as many if not more, live within their parameters and DO have access to public transportation need be

I used to live on LI and commuted from E. Northport to South Jamaica so I know what it is like.

We, as educators, may not agree with politicians or business men that want to tell us what to do and how to do it, but 'black and white dont lie' and the standardized scores HAVE gone up and there SHOULD be more accountability than back in the day - teachers had very little as did administrators and it is time that people realize that the children of the nations largest school system deserves more than just a pulse for a teacher
