Is immigration still good for America?

This was a recent debate at my school.
What do you think?

I don't think so. I'm not saying stop it completely but increase our border patrols so less illegals come in and put a limit on it.

Did you know 3/4 of all babies born in LA county are from illegal aliens and the children born in America from illegal aliens are immediately granted US citizenship? Then the mother has a much easier time getting it too. So of course a lot of pregnant mothers cross the borders just in time to have their babies. :(

JMO - This doesn't surprise me. Here in Ireland they were experiencing the same problems. They just changed their laws so that not everyone born in the country has a right to citizenship, now 1 parent must meet a 3 year residency requirement. I would love to see something like this happen in the States. Women who cross the borders to have their children need to be stopped. They don't pay taxes and then their children are citizens who can receive all the advantages of being an American on my tax dollar

right like free healthcare, free education until theyre 18, food stamps, housing assistance, and welfare..

It seems so backwards. Im a legal citizen and I go into the hospital to have a baby and they wont see me until I show insurance... then I end up paying thousands in bills... They are ILLEGAL, waltz on in and waltz on out with nothing to pay?????!!! HUH??

O.k. at least if they come here illegally and have their babies, send them back in a week or so!!! Dont let them stay and dont give away citizenship. Its become like a prize for anyone who can successfully sneak over the border and have a baby!! UGH!

How sad is that? My parents own their own business and have to pay $700/month to have medical benefits....says something about our government. Hardworking Americans who pay taxes have to pay a fortune for their medical insurance, but let people come on over and have their babies for free.

I could go on and on Its so sad really because I feel like America is going the wrong way..

I think its time to close the doors. People aren't coming here for the right reasons anymore.

I understand and accept everyone's opinions,however to say that people arent coming for the right reasons is a broad statement.
You are correct some do not, but many come to produce a better life for themselves and their children.

If it wasnt for my FH immigrating to the USA I wouldnt have met him, he came legally (when he was a teenager) his family worked their butts off and made many sacrifices..

I do believe that laws need to be more strict/developed but closing borders is not right, OUR country was built on immigrants, most of our families trace back to immigrants...

I agree. Most of our family were immigrants. Legal Immigration was a good idea back then, but I dont think it is anymore. Think of all the problems we have now just with pollution and overpopulation alone. American needs to start taking care of America first.
Maybe we should close it for a while.figure out a better immigration policy and then open it up again, but put a serious limit on it.

Its a shame, but so many illegals come over just from Mexico alone each day. We need to seriously increase border patrol too. Did you hear of the family in Mexico, who had 13 family members trying to get into the US and died in the desert due to no water, and are now trying to sue the US for making it so hard to get in!

Perhaps I should have said that there should be more regulations of our borders. Yes there are many people who maintain the ideals and dreams of our ancestors who came here years ago. But there are just as many who don't.

What I resent is the guy who has been a citizen for 30 years and claims he can't serve on a jury because he doesn't speak English. Not everyone adapts and/or assimilates, but if you want to reap the benefits of the this amazing place we call America, you should be prepared to serve it in the same way those of us who were/are born here do. And THAT I will not retract.

beachgirl - Im sorry. I wasnt saying you didnt know anything. Im just shocked by all I learned and think they need to do something at least. What would you suggest?
