Is immigration still good for America?

Original post by honestmommy

This was a recent debate at my school.
What do you think?

I don't think so. I'm not saying stop it completely but increase our border patrols so less illegals come in and put a limit on it.

Did you know 3/4 of all babies born in LA county are from illegal aliens and the children born in America from illegal aliens are immediately granted US citizenship? Then the mother has a much easier time getting it too. So of course a lot of pregnant mothers cross the borders just in time to have their babies. :(

All I can say is that I do think that immigration brings some good to the U.S. I'll leave it at that, because I can see this post getting out of hand.

An additional thought:

Alot of Americans are very quick to say we should close our doors...but they forget who does alot of the housecleaning, gardening, nannying and hard labor in this country...MANY people without greencards bust their butts serving those who do. This might not be legal, but alot of rich Americans depend on them.

Just food for thought.

honestmommy, I wish I had the answers. I don't think it's that easy. No hard feelings, I just get frustrated sometimes. I was going to bring up the same point as bunnymonkey. Whenever things are going wrong, people are always so quick to say oh let's blame the immigrants, close our doors and the problems will go away. What people don't realize is that many immigrants work those jobs that so many people don't want to go anywhere near. So it's just frustrating to me to read that so many people are quick to jump on the 'close the door' bandwagon.

I want to clarify my opinion. I don't think America should close it's doors but I do believe that we need to control our borders better and have greater regulations on who can become a citizen. 200 years ago it was a great idea to allow everyone who is born in this country to become a citizen, but when you have people crossing over the just to have a baby so it can be a US citizen, I have a problem with that. I also believe that Immigration needs to monitor the people who are here on student visas or regular visas. When the visa expires, immigration should know where these people are. 9/11 proved we need better border control and monitoring of immigrants who come into this country. I would hate to see us close our borders, DIVERSITY is what makes our country GREAT!

Does anybody know the statistics on what 'class' of people collect the most social services in this country? The answers might surprise some. There are much graver issues in this world that need to be addressed, such as millions, yes millions, of people dying each year because of extreme poverty.

I think its time to close the doors. People aren't coming here for the right reasons anymore.

and they are not giving anything back. I know all my employees send their money back to their countries, so none goes toward our economy.

How can that possibly be true? Are they paying taxes, buying products such as groceries, gas, other necessities? All that feeds into the ecomony of the US. If they choose to send their wages back home instead of spending them on things not required to substain themselves, why is that bad? Peolpe still come to this country for the right reasons, such as to earn a living because they can't in their respective courtries, to escape persecution, to provide their children for a better life through education and opportunity.

I agree. Most of our family were immigrants. Legal Immigration was a good idea back then, but I dont think it is anymore. Think of all the problems we have now just with pollution and overpopulation alone. American needs to start taking care of America first.

I am deeply morally offended by this and I don't care if I get flamed. My grandparents came over from Germany right as the Nazis were coming to power. I am the 1st generation on my mother's side to be born here. My grandfather served this country throughout WWII in the National Guard, as he wasn't permitted in any other arm to the Armed Forces since he was an immigrant.

On my father's side, I'm the 2nd generation born here. They immigrated from Ireland so that they could feed their family due to the deserpate state Ireland was in at the time. My great grandfather and his company helped to bring you Rockerfeller Center, the 6's buidling, the World Trade Towers... I could go on.

By saying that immigration to the United States isn't a good idea anymore is so insulting to us that have a recent history of immrigrating! Our first female secretary of state, Madeline Albright, immigrated with her family here. The governer of California is an immrigrant. How are they not contributions to this country?

I think immigration will always be good for America.
It's what we were founded on
It's what makes us different
It's what makes us great
It's what makes us America

I think this is all true. It kinda upsets me that people have the nerve to think they have more of a right to live in this country than others. Yes it may be true that you are a citizen, but its not as easy for everyone that lives in another country to gain that same freedom. We arent suppose to discriminate against people, yet our govt gets to choose who comes in and out of this country. It may not be right for people to come into this country for the sake of having a baby, but there are thousands of illegal immigrants in this country today that bust their butts to do disgusting, back breaking jobs that our lazy a$$ are just too good for. Sorry if this offends anyone, but I believe my opinions are just as importants as anyone elses.
