Is it a big deal...

Original post by Thrilled

to not do the garter/throwing the bouquet thing?

1) We feel it breaks up the party and takes up 20 unnecessary minutes
2) Most of our friends are already coupled
3) I am not sure how I feel about exposing my leg to the world

We totally weren't having one until someone's jaw dropped and said 'You aren't having the garter toss/bouquet thing? People will be so disappointed!'

Heck I get annoyed when they slow things down to cut the cake! I like to party, people!

Rachel, we are not doing it either. Most of all our friends are married so we did not think it would be right for those that are not. Instead of the anniversary dance, we are going to be celebrating our parents anniversary (2 weeks before we get married my FILS will be married 40 years and next May my parents will be married 31 years). So we are going to play each of their wedding song, have them dance to it and present each mom with a bouquet and each father with a garter.

maybe thats when we'll do something special for the moms... since we have a mothers day wedding.

We will not be doing either. My sister is the only single girl who will be at the wedding and I don't think she'll like me very much if I make her stand out all alone to catch my bo-k lol.

An anniversary dance is when all the married couples are called onto the dance floor and than the DJ tells each couple to sit depending on how long they have been married and the couple married the longest received the b-ook and garter.

No big deal
We didnt do the garter thing - no one seemed to notice.

I threw a Bok from the steps of the church because I wanted a picture and my cousin who was dieing to get engaged thought it would be a nice reminder for her BF. - She didnt catch it but she is marring him next month

I've seen the anniversary dance done without the garter - we're just giving a bo-k. I'm not wearing a garter.

LOL - Rach - When my maitre d said it was time to cut the cake - I asked if we had to? I didn't want to stop partying - I was having so much fun. I was so mad I had to stop to do the whole cake cutting thing. LOL

I hardly see the toss anymore at weddings - I guess because most of my friends are getting older and coupled off. My single girlfriends thanked me for not doing it. I didn't do the toss thing but Lou did remove my garter (I surprised him with 2 garters a Jets one and a throw away one).

I did the anniversary dance. We played Thru the Year and invited all married couples to the dance floor. Then the dj would say anyone under 5 years married leave and so on until the longest married couple was left. We gave them the tossing bouquet and throw away garter. (You don't have to do the garter thing to do the anniversary dance.) To me is was really special because we have 4 couples married over 50 years and 3 over 55!!!!!

Re: Is it a big deal...

im going to give it to longest married couple...not a big fan of the bo'k toss. The only people who may miss it is my cousins, but that would be a bit weird a cousin putting the garter on another cousin. With that thought I'm definately not having the bo'k and garter toss

Personally, I hate the garter thing.

I think the bouquet toss is fun, but I don't miss it when it's not done.

I'm not doing it, and I think the only people who will notice are my single girl friends who will be relieved that they don't have to make a spectacle of themselves. In all of the weddings I've been to recently, I've only seen it done once. If you don't want to do it, don't bother.

We didn't do it at our wedding - and nobody asked or missed it. We did the anniversary dance instead. Most of our friends/family are married, so we didn't want to embarrass anyone...

'All single ladies, stand up for the bouquet' - and have like 5 girls up there. That's no fun!!

Personally I am doing it just because we want too, but I think it is totally ok to not do it & I doubt anyone will notice!

We didn't do either. I remembered how much I hated being single at weddings when it came time for the 'tosses'!!!

I dedicated my bouquet to my mom - the *only* time I cried on my wedding day (like a baby, mind you )!!

Do what you feel comfortable with!

Re: Is it a big deal...

I am also not doing the garter or bouquet toss. We don't have that many single friends or family left and those who are still single do not want to get up. I have been to weddings where they didn't do then and it was fine.

We are doing the anniversary dance to give away the bouquet.

Do whatever makes you happy!

I think it is neat. I went to a wedding almost two years ago and the woman who caught the Bouquet and the guy who caught the garter were not dating at the time of the wedding, but are now getting married this winter. Now, isn't that something! I say go for it! It is harmless fun! Personally, I think the money dance is much worse!

Re: Is it a big deal...

I didn't do either...not many single girls...and there is no way I would let my 14 -year old (looks 20)niece have a garter put on her!!

I, like Kathi, never liked being singled out either...

we did the anniversary dance...and it was a huge hit...the older couples really loved it...and our winners were married 57 years!!!

my sister also did it...and one month later the wife died...sad...but so nice that she was recognized for her lengthy marriage...
