Is it a big deal...

Is it a big deal...

to not do the garter/throwing the bouquet thing?

1) We feel it breaks up the party and takes up 20 unnecessary minutes
2) Most of our friends are already coupled
3) I am not sure how I feel about exposing my leg to the world

We totally weren't having one until someone's jaw dropped and said 'You aren't having the garter toss/bouquet thing? People will be so disappointed!'

Heck I get annoyed when they slow things down to cut the cake! I like to party, people!

Re: Is it a big deal...

We're not doing the garter toss. We have a lot of very young girls (14-17) and I don't want some guy sticking a garter on their thigh, nor do I want some guy taking the garter off of mine!! I also don't want them embarrassed if we had to say 'no, you're too young, we're not doing the garter thing'.

Anyway, we're giving the bouquet to the oldest married couple in the room. And the garter-that's for my FH to take off later

No one will care.

I wasn't going to do it, but being that the hall where I'm having it has these huge balconies, I'm going to DEF do it.. I am able to toss it off of the balcony..

Re: Is it a big deal...

I'm with you on not breaking up the party. I am not doing the garter belt toss. It is just not my thing. Something about having my husband taking it off me with my entire family and his watching doesn't thrill me. As for the bouquet toss,I am just handing it to my little sister. Or at least that's the plan for now. I know that my single friends do not want to be reminded that they are single. Plus, my fiance never wanted me to go out there to catch the bouquet when we were dating. Just my opinion. But do what you are confortable with. I don't think these are things that people get dissapointed over if they don't happen.

Re: Is it a big deal...

we didn't do it, and people were too busy dancing to notice or miss it. Most of the weddings I've been to recently haven't done it.

the first time I was at a wedding where it didn't happen I was surprised, but then I thought about it - it wasn't like I was going to try and catch it anyway, so why did I even care? If you don't want to do it, then don't. I don't think its an integral part of the reception.

Re: Is it a big deal...

at first i was going to do it... but we were just at a wedding where they didn't do it, and i didn't miss it!!I always hated it being a single guest at weddings. And it gives more time to party!!! we don't have too many single people anyway. so we're not doing it. (edited--didn't give my answer in orig. post hehe)

Do we still wear a garter though even if we don't do it?

Re: Is it a big deal...

Good question, Tracy. Do we still wear the garter if we aren't having the thingamajig?

Garter strikes me as hot and itchy. Plus I'd want a sage colored one and I have yet to see any....

I am not doing either one!

I'm not doing it either. Most people aren't going to miss it, I never thought that whole thing was much fun anyway!! I also agree it can break up the flow of the party. My mom gave me a similar reaction when I told her we weren't doing it, but someone is always going to have something to say no matter what you do. YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE SO YOU'VE GOT TO PLEASE YOURSELF!!

Re: Is it a big deal...

I didn't do it and I see it less and less lately. We did the anniversary dance instead and it was more appororiate as we had an older crowd of mostly couples.

I wore the garter anyway - I had gotten it as a gift from my shower and just had to wear it! I didn't even notice I had it on - I forgot till the end of the night!

I'm in the same boat - - mostly everyone is married. I'm doing the anniversary dance instead. It keeps people dancing and celebrates a long-lasting marriage.

My brother didn't do it, and I didn't notice it until after it was over, noone else even missed it.

If you don't want to do it, then don't it is your day, nad if people really care, then they should have their own wedding.

Re: Is it a big deal...

I have a lot of friends (a few over 30) that aren't married. They DO NOT want to be singled out by the BOK toss. We also have barely any guys that are single and the few that are wouldn't get up anyway.

We are doing the garter removal and then having an anniversary dance. The two dancing longest (married the longest) will get the BOK and garter. The man will place the garter on the womans leg (I think it will be my Aunt and Uncle next door and they are soooooooo funny!!!)

This is a great post for me b/c we haven't decide what were are going to do. I don't really want it but I will have alot of single people at the wedding and they may enjoy it. Who knows!

We didnt (for the same reasons you listed) and no one noticed, if they did I didn't hear about it. Do what you want!

Re: Is it a big deal...

We are most definitely, 100%, without a doubt NOT doing the garter or bo-k toss. I am so *not* fond of either tradition. We'll most likely do the anniversary dance and present a bo-k to FHs nannie - our only grandparent alive...she'll be 95 at the wedding.

Re: Is it a big deal...

I didn't do the garter thing- but I did throw a bo-k... it only took like 5 minutes and we did it right before (or after) the cake (i forget)...

The garter thing skeeves me a little.

But yes, I still wore one.
