As you can see FH and I discuss a multitude of topics.
I am Black woman born in America- Fh is a black male whose parents are from Guyanna.
We come from two different cultures.
The niece and nephew thread got me thinking.
I do not call my aunts and uncles- Aunt Mary or uncle john. We were rasied to just call first names.
Fh thinks that is the worst thing in the world. To him it is a sign of respect. where his parents are from they properly adress everyone. He says when he have children our children must address people with titles i.e. Aunt this or Mr or Mrs. this. I will gladly do this for him, but honestly I do not mind my own nieces and nephews calling me Kysha.
Do you always give titles when speaking to people.

I'm a white woman of mixed decent (dutch, native american, irish, english, etc.), but I grew up to give everyone a title. I don't mind my nieces and nephews calling me by my first name, but I always call people 'Aunt.... or Uncle.....'. It sounds like it's very important to your husband.

Re: is it a respect thing?
i have always called my family by titles...i feel that you should do what youre comfortable with, but if you will be raising children togther you should work this out! IMO, if it means a lot to him, maybe it couldnt hurt to use titles. thats a good topic to bring up!

I don't mind doing it at all for him.
I was just questioning the respect factor involved.

Re: is it a respect thing?
I call all my aunts and uncles 'Aunt and Uncle' except for one - My aunt Laura I simply call Laura, and this is only because she married my uncle when I was 14 and she was 27 ....and we just hit it off! I respect her but it would feel weird for me to call her Aunt Laura...to me that makes her seem OLD lol

I always call peopl by their titles, and it annoys me a bit, that my FH's niece doesn't call me Aunt, while she called my FH's SIL Aunt even before they were married, and no one corrects her.

Re: is it a respect thing?
im not really sure.. on my fiances fathers side they use to call them aunt and uncle.. until they got to a certain age.. then it just became Marie instead of aunt marie, which fiance loves because he feels like more of an adult on a more equal level with them
on his mothers side it is still 'aunt' and 'uncle'.. which he then does not adress them by any name but simply begins talking when he has their attention
on my mothers side there is one aunt and uncle... my BIL calls them by just there first name and i have heard that they are not too happy about that, but they still like him as a person...

Re: is it a respect thing?
When I am speaking about my aunts or uncles in the third person I use titles, but when speaking to them...I use their first names.. I think that comes with age (or at least it did with me....I feel too old to be referring to someone as Aunt Carol)
My 6 yr. old nephew refers to me as Aunt Jessica though and I love to hear it!
I always referred to my aunts and uncles as aunt and uncle...
but most of my neighbors growing up I called by their first names...except the older ones I would use titles...
I think it is a traditional thing and I judge the situation on what I should use...
I love when DH's nieces and nephew call me aunt...not out of respect...but out of love

Re: is it a respect thing?
While I always refer to my own aunts and uncles and other older family members as 'Aunt' and 'Uncle', my own niece and nephew never use it with me. I was 17 when my niece was born. I was 25 when my nephew was born, but since his sister didn't... I'm not insulted - they do use it when they very obviously want something (in sort of that whiney tone!) and I love it.

I don't call my uncle 'Uncle so and so' because he doesn't like it. I just call him by his name. My nephews don't call me 'Aunt Sue' either. It doesn't bother me at all.

Re: is it a respect thing?
Kysha I totally understand you on this. Its a Caribbean thing. FH's side its all about Auntie this and Uncle that. To people who are NOT even by blood an aunt or uncle. He told me that he really didn't know who his 'real' aunts and uncles were till he was in his teens!!
My family on the other hand, we call Aunts and Uncles that are blood related. Those that are married into the family are simply JoAnn or Miguel. For other family friends and other elders its Mr and Mrs. Now, since I am an 'adult' I call them by their first name.
I find the auntie and uncle thing with FH extremely weird. That won't be happening with my kids. We are not raising them that way. I don't want them calling my neighbors Auntie this or that. I think Mr and Mrs. Smith is just fine. That I think is very respectful if you are a young buck talking to an elder.

Re: is it a respect thing?
no, my Mom's siblings re from that Hippie era & do not think that a child need feel degraded by using a proper term in conjuction with a name.
BUT MY OTHER SIDE....not only do I call my aunties & uncles, but any cousins that are a generation older than me I call auntie & uncle also.
