Is it just me or is it rude

Original post by skew

for someone to ask how much your house was? unless it was a family member i would NEVER ask someone how much they paid for their home.

DH and i are buying a house that is more expensive than what most of our friends can afford. we are extremely fortunate and grateful that we have to means to be able to afford more, but are EXTREMELY uncomfortable when asked this question.

am i being too sensitive?

Some people are ok with that stuff others are not. DH and I never care about talking about it.

We openly discuss it with people if they ask.

It doesn't bother me either.

I have wanted to ask people on here before. We want to buy a house in the next year so we are trying to get ideas but I didn't want people to think I was rude.

I would never ask, but depending on who asked me I would or wouldn't care.

If it was a friend who is house hunting or trying to figure out what houses cost for their own situation, I wouldn't mind.

If it was a neighbor or co-worker who is a busybody then yes, I would think it is rude.

I agree; it is extremely rude. I find in those situations, I just tell them how much it was, and they are so shocked that it shuts them up. Either that or I get the follow-up question: 'What does your husband do for a living?'

I dont think its rude...IMO...being in the position where I am trying to purchase something (probably a co-op) it helps to see how much someone else bought something for and what their mortgage or maintenance fee is...makes it easier for me to figure out what I can and can't afford. To me the pricing of houses is so random...so I dont feel like I'm trying to measure someone up when I ask, its just plain curiousity. I always ask if they dont mind telling me, if they mind I dont push it!
