for someone to ask how much your house was? unless it was a family member i would NEVER ask someone how much they paid for their home.
DH and i are buying a house that is more expensive than what most of our friends can afford. we are extremely fortunate and grateful that we have to means to be able to afford more, but are EXTREMELY uncomfortable when asked this question.
am i being too sensitive?

YES! it is rude! It's right up there with the classless people who will ask you what size your e-ring is and if they can try it on!

Some people are ok with that stuff others are not. DH and I never care about talking about it.

We openly discuss it with people if they ask.

I've never found that to be rude. In fact I'm usually flattered when people ask to try it on.

It is rude to ask but it is public knowledge once you go to closing. If you don't say anything, they can find out for themselves anyway....

I am with you. We only told a very select few what we are paying for the house. I have had many many others ask me how much we paid, what percent mortgage we got, how much our payments will be, how much we are putting down, etc. I find it very rude but thats just me.

I don't find it rude if people ask straight out. I hate when they try to be sneaky about it.

Re: Is it just me or is it rude
It depends why they're asking: I think it's rude if they're just asking to compare, but if they are asking b/c they are house-hunting and trying to figure out what's out there, then it's okay.
On a side note, my co-worker has just started house-hunting and kept telling me that all the houses they have looked at are really nasty and need a lot of work. She said it appears that she just can't afford to have a nice house right now b/c her price range is so low, but she can have all the 'crap holes' she wants. Turns out her price range is WELL ABOVE what DH and I just paid for our (very cute) house...
Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but she basically implied my house is a nasty crap hole.

That many questions is just annoyinh! I don't mind sharing anything if it is for someone looking at houses, or looking for help... but someone being nosy that is just annoying.

I don't mind talking about it at all, esp. if it's going to help someone... But I don't really like it when people just ask me outright. Like 'Oh you got a house- great...What'ya pay for it?!' I've had quite a few people do that & I guess it was more their tone that ticked me off.

Re: Is it just me or is it rude
Its definitely cool IMO to ask what you paid for your house.... for the reason alone to keep property values high.
Perfect example. I paid 182k to move into my co-op in Aug03.
I now have a new next door neighbor and a new guy above me that just bought last month. I asked them what they paid (straight up - wasn't sneaky) and they both told me no problems. Its in their own best interest to tell me. The guy next to me paid 220k. The guy above me paid 227k. We all have very similar apartments.
Now when I go to list my place for sale when its time... I'll list it for like 240k knowing what they got for theirs. If I didn't know what they got for theirs... I could be undercutting the market and may have only listed my place for 220k.
If somebody asks me what I paid... i'll tell them. I want to make sure they get their fair share of value.
Its all about keeping the property value at its highest it can be. Its not 'rude' IMO.
Its not like they are asking your income and stuff.

I don't mind at all. Within a few weeks of moving in there were numerous realtor mailings that showed recent sales in the area with our hosue listed, so its no big secret.
Anyone can find out...

Exactly. I talk about everything with my friends who are going through the same thing or with you ladies so we can help each other...but I know the people who have asked me such detailed questions as the ones I said above are looking for pure gossip or to figure out how much money me and FH have or make etc.

I think it's rude! Like today for instance, the guy that cuts my hair was asking me how much I paid for my house. It came up in conversation. He was throwing numbers at me and I was just like Yeah, something like that. I just feel like people try to be nosey sometimes and want to know your business and financial situation. I would never ask antone straight out how much they paid for their house. If you want to get an idea of how much the value of your house went up comparing it to others, get an appraisal!

EXACTLY. for house huntingt purposes, or comps reference fine. i just find it rude when people say, 'WOW that is an expensive area, how much is the house?' or for those (i made the mistake of telling that i should not have told) responding w/ 'are you kidding me? how can you afford that much? we can only afford xxx amount.'

Re: Is it just me or is it rude
I think it's rude, depending on who asks. If it's immediate family, or a close friend that's also looking, I am OK with it. But I was SHOCKED at how everyone asked us - people we barely knew found no problem asking and I think that's strange - I was so often taken aback I answered out of shock!
