Is it just me...Rant

Is it just me...Rant

Okay, maybe I'm ranting and coming down from an extremely busy two weeks, but certain statements about fitting in exercise annoy me. Yesterday while in the airport, I saw an article in some airline magazine which stated that even the President can fit in exercise, and if he can, you can too.

I don't know how many times I have seen statements like this over the years, and it just annoys me. Yes, the President is extremely busy, and it must take some doing to squeeze exercise into the day. But, think about it. Many of us work very long days also, are raising children, etc. Plus, the President doesn't have to buy groceries, prepare food, wash his clothes, clean his house, maintain his car, and so on.

I guess I don't like statements like this because they seem to be set up to make people feel guilty if they are having trouble squeezing exercise into their days.

Just wanted to share. Thanks!

well, I can see where you're coming from, but most people do use excuses to not fit exercise into their day. most of us have downtime that we use to watch tv, surf the internet, etc., and if we really wanted to fit the exercise in, we would (wake up earlier, exercise during lunch, etc).

I must agree with this. You can even do exercise in front of the computer.

Sit tall and contract and release your glutes and abs.

Yes, there are definitely things you can sneak in during the day. I have a lot of meetings during the day, so I try to walk a bit more when I am going back and forth between the meetings (in the city).

And a lot of people definitely blow off exercise, and there are times when I blow it off also. But most of the time, I am honest to goodness going all day and into the evening and feel it's a stretch to fit it in more than 4 days a week. Getting up earlier than I do is hard unless I want to skimp on my sleep still more and lunchtime workouts are not an option for me. So I guess I resent this implication that I'm being a lazy sclub when I see it popping up since I am literally going all day and most of the evening many days.

Guess I should just let it go and do my best to fit in exercise when I can. My problem is I feel guilty when I honestly can't do it, and articles like that just feed that guilt.

Don't be so hard on yourself. W also gets to bed early and takes lots of vacations; he's not the typical president.

I'm not defending W..but being President is a 24/7 job..most Presidents take 'vacations' but they are always working, having meetings...etc..
Really, I'm not defending W...

ETA: Don't feel so bad, it's a struggle for everyone to get the exersize in.

I understand why you don't like the statement, it is trying to guilt people into exercising.
But I really beleive that if you want to exercise, you will make time. It doesn't have to be a class, it can be parking far away or maybe getting off a different subway stop in order to walk a couple of blocks.

I like to go to the bathroom at work on a different floor and take the stairs. It might sound like a little thing but I go to the bathroom at work between 6 and 8 times a day and I walk up two flights each time. It is the little things that add up.

It took some time, but I found a dojo that taught kickboxing classes at hours I can make it - 7:30 and 8:30pm - because I only have so many hours in the day.... Squeezing the time in is extremely tough!!!!

I work out for only 30-35 minutes 5 day a week. That is all the time you need if you trian smart and efficiently.

Thank you for all of your advice! When I'm feeling overwhelmed and stressed I tend to overreact, and take things very personally. In retrospect, it seems silly to get upset over a general statement in a magazine article.

But a lot of you had good suggestions that I am putting to work. These days, I'm finding it very difficult to visit the gym on a regular basis, but I can do mini workouts and get exercise where I can. Last night I lifted weights at home for about 20 minutes, and I was thinking of following a TV exercise program today(but desperately wanted more sleep)! So I went for a walk at lunch instead.

I would love to exercise more, but this is a busy time in my life, so I think I have to get it where I can.

Thanks again!
