I may be a good think but it may also mean that the appraiser you went to hikes up the price. Let me explain. If you get your ring appraised and you are told that you got a great price for the value than congrats!!! However, be careful because when I researched getting my ring insured I was told that it is not worth it to get your ring insured for such a high price if it is not accurate. You will have to pay higher premiums and if anything should happen to the ring they will probably repay you with a stone of the same quality/characteristics (weight, clarity, depth, etc) and not with the $$$ stated on your appraisal. So in the end you are paying more in insurance than you are getting. When I heard this I decided to go for a second opinion. We went to a gemologist. Her appraisal was not extremely different from the original appraisal we had gotten (which we got from where the ring was purchased) but it was lower and probably more accurate. It was definitely more detailed. Hope this helps.

ok the appraisal that I got came with the ring when we bought it. I was from the gia or agl whaterver i cant remeber but It said the carat size, dimensions, cut and clarity on the paper. i havent gotten my ins yet but i got a quote for 200$/ year on top of my homeowners. Im so confused if i should get another appraisal, maybe be cause the apprasal is biased because I got it from the jewler that sold the ring to me, i am being really naive I know but Im clueless.

definitely get an appraisal from a place other than where you bought the ring. Often the jewelers who sell the rings will inflate the appraisal in order to make it look like you're getting a good deal.

We were in the exact same position and I was just as clueless!!! That's why I went by what the insurance agent told me. In the end we were told by the gemologist that we did get a great deal. I don't think that the second appraisal made a really significant difference in our premiums. But there was some difference. Also, you have to pay to have the ring appraised. We paid $99. So some may say it's not worth it. Wish I had better advice for you! Did you try posting on the wedding planning board?

We were also told this by the insurance agent. We wanted an outsider to tell us what they really thought it was worth!

I think the ring should be appraised by an independent third party that does not charge a commission based on the appraised value. You want the ring to be insured for replacement value for proper coverage.

This is something I need to do since it hasn't been appraised since DH gave it to me.

This is what I was told: there are 2 types of appraisals, and insurance appraisal and an actual appraisal. MOst times when you go to a jeweler to get your ring appraised, you will get an insurance appraisal. This number is inflated, thats just the way it is! (Grossly? I dont know)

An actual appraisal, I believe is supposed to appraise what the current value is/should be.

Ok I think that i got an isurance one because- it says on the paper- ' For insurance purposes'

IF The only reason I want the appraisal is for insurance purposes- then why would I need to get another one???

This is the way I understood it..
The place that you bought the ring from has an interest in the appraisal because they want you to think that you are getting a good deal. You can use that appraisal to get the ring insured. BUT..
If you go to an independent appraiser they usually do not have a vested interest in how much it is worth and can be more objective.
Hoping you got a good deal is one thing but an overly higher value appraisal than the ring is actually worth will cost you more in premiums. You want to base the insured amount on what the ring is actually worth. I have been told to get it appraised more than once in your lifetime because market values change for jewelry.

Does that make sense..I'm sorry if it doesn't.

Thanks Dawnie- I think I understand now. Maybe I'll see what the other app. says and make dec based on that- Thanks

I used the Jewelry Judge in Garden City. He is on Old Country Road. He wasn't expensive.
