If there was shameless douchebaggery or overall unwarrented @ssholeness, then I think that's fine.
ETA: In fact, I would actually tell them that they no longer need to save the date, this way they are free to make other plans. Because THAT'S how strongly I feel about this.

I don't think it is but I'm doing that to a few ppl because I sent mine out almost a yr ago and I noticed a few changes in a few of them and I really dont care for them anymore. It's not good to do though but in some cases it's understandable

Yeah, nothing like that happened lol. We finally have a solid list and it's more than we thought and some of FH's friends who we sent a STD to can easily be removed to keep the list down a little. It's all because I was too excited in the beginning and had to send out the STD's right away lol
ETA: and actually a couple of them FH hasn't even spoken to since we mailed them out and that was back in September.

If its b/c time has lapsed and you just don't see them as much / wanna save $$, I would still send the invitation, chances are, they won't come if they feel the same way. It depends...however, if you really do not want the person there...forget ettiquette, don't invite.

We had sent some people STD's and when it was time to send the invites out we were no longer speaking to those people, so we didn't send invitations to them.
I think that if there are circumstances on why you don't want to send them on invite then its perfectly fine
