How do you voice that you'd prefer cash vs registry presents?
Any stores that give cash refunds?
It's just that this wedding is costing us an arm and a leg!

In answer to the question which is the topic - yes it is rude to say you prefer cash.
If you want the word spread then you need to rely on family members to answer that way when and if asked what you are looking for, but it is rude for them (or you) to suggest it).

what if you just dont register? then wont people assume cash? or will they end up getting you really weird gifts
If you don't register you'll get a ceramic light up Bible with a generic version of Corinthians (actually, you may get that even if you do register like we did).
Did they at least give you a gift receipt
I was tempted to write 'Thank you for sharing in our wedding day and for the generous gift receipt. It is the perfect shape, size & color' for a non-registry glassware set with some funky floral pattern. DH thought it would be hilarious but I did not do it. Now the task is finding the store (some place in NJ) so we can return the glasses.

No receipt, and God (pun intended) only knows where they got it from. But, it is the type of thing that is too funny to exchange-we have to keep it to prove to people we received it. Otherwise, I don't think people would believe us. I can picture us whipping it on our 10, 25, 40 year anniversaries!

Re: Is it rude to say you prefer cash?
We just didn't register. We have more than enough 'stuff'. Almost everyone that came to our wedding gave us cash ... so it worked out well.
Have very close friends and family spread the word. When my friend was getting amrried I knew how tight they were moneywise. I asked her what she preferred for engagement/shower and she told me $$ (although she was a bit embarrased) I helped to spread the word to our mutual friends.
Smart idea!

BUT, you still shouldn't ask for cash.
No you did NOT!
who in the world would ever think it would be a good gift idea????

Some relatives from upstate-like I stated, when you consider the comedic value, it is a priceless gift. I know I sound ungrateful, but neither they nor we are very religious. I dunno, so funny but so weird.

Re: Is it rude to say you prefer cash?
No offense, but I think this is TOTALLY rude to ask people for money on your shower or your wedding. You are not having a wedding to make cash, or else we would call it a fundraiser. Sorry to be so harsh, but sometimes we lose sight of what the cermony and reception are really about.
If i were you I would not register. Have your BM put that on your shower invite. maybe you can get more monetary gifts and gift cards this way.

I think its a personal choice but overall it is considered 'rude' to ask the guests for cash directly...like someone mentioned earlier - spread the word through family and friends...

Re: Is it rude to say you prefer cash?
I think it's rude. When I go to a shower I like to pick something out for the person that I think they would really like, and 20 years from now when they use they think of me. If someone told me they wanted cash, I would be very turned off.
