Is it tacky to send STD's and invitations to guests who probably will not attend?

I have been going back and forth on this one. Some people tell me it IS tacky b/c it looks like you are asking for gifts even though you know they aren't coming. However, that isn't my intention. It is my way of including them in our wedding, even if they can't attend. I think they would just get a kick out of seeing the STD's and invitations, even if they throw it out.

All opinions welcome!

I don't think it is tacky at all. It shows you want them there even though they cannot be there. I knew ahead of time my friend was unable to make the e-party and I still sent her an invite. Plans might change and she thanked me for sending it. Send it...not tacky at all. I think it is thoughtful. If they send a gift great, if not who cares.

I am definitely sending to everyone, especially those who can't attend. It saves feelings ('Why were you invited and not me?') and sometimes there are so unique moments where the people really try hard to make it.

I don't think it's tacky to want people to attend and to express that though sending an invitation. I say go for it! I can't go to every wedding I'm invited to but I am grateful for the invite, and always get a warm fuzzy from someone thinking of me. Of course, I do send a gift even if I can't go, but I don't feel solicited. In a few cases friends have gotten married and not sent one because I live far away or something, and I always felt a little hurt.

Not at all. I think it shows that you want them there. And IMO I think it is tacky not to send one to a family member who you know cant make it.

i agree that it is not tacky to send one - i did it.

Maybe you could include a handwritten note with the ones in question just saying 'I know you said you couldn't make it, but I wanted you to have all the details in case your plans change - we would still love to have you!'
