if your going to send the, iw ould do so immedaitely. don't forget that wedding invitations go out about 8 weeks before the weeding and youdon't want people receiving them both a few weeks after each other.
but like the OP said, they are not necessary unless you want them

Hahahaa I'm sending mine out in a couple of weeks (my photographer is still creating them) so they still have to be ordered, adressed, and sent. So I figure everyone will have them by beginning of may. Basically 5 mos prior. And ill send invites 6 wks prior.

My best friend sent her's out 4 months in advance... not too late at all!

nope you can still send them out youve got 7 months to go! i think less than 5 dont bother

I think the general rule is no later than 6 months before the wedding so you are still fine.
