to start planning my cake. In April I plan on booking my hall and figured I'd get my cake out of the way too. The wedding is in Nov 2011.

What do you mean by 'plan my cake'?
I just gave a picture of a cake I liked to my RH about two weeks before my wedding along with some small changes to personalize it and told them what flavors I wanted and they made it exactly like I dreamed on our wedding day. It was so perfect and delicious!
You can certainly start collecting photographs and pictures of cakes you like now. You can buy your topper too, although you might want to wait a little while just to see if your tastes change or if you see something even better.
I would say it's probably a little too early to tell your RH what you want for your cake, though.

I'm not going through the RH for my cake. I have a friend who is a pastry chef and she is doing my cake. She is absolutely amazing. The thing is I live in Ma. trying to get as much as I can done each time I come down to NY. I don't get to come down very often

Yeah, I agree. If you have a unique situation, it's never to early to plan

Well, you didn't say that in your original post so it would've been hard to just know that.
I agree with the other posters -- enjoy your wedding planning process and do whatever you want whenever you want.

i agree with everyone else-since your situation is different; it's totally fine to go ahead and get another check out of the way.

Re: Is it too early
When you say you're booking your hall in April, I don't know if that means you know what hall already... so if you don't, just keep in mind that your cake might be included in your package, so if your friend is doing it for free, great, but if not, just consider the cost of duplicating the cake... you may want to decide to have her make a cake for the RD or have her make a groom's cake instead...
If it were me, I'd think about my cake options and what I want, but I wouldn't commit to anything until my RH contract was set. JMO.

I would say it is never too early to plan things, but there really isn't much to 'cake planning.' I gathered pictures of what I wanted for a while, then went to the bakery about 3 weeks before the wedding to show them what I wanted, and did a tasting. But - start whenever you want. I don't see why not!
