Hey all! I need some advice...we got engaged in January of this year. Someone told me it's too late to have an engagement party, but I didn't think it really mattered. We were planning on doing something in September - nothing huge, just a backyard party.
Is there some sort of rule for things like this?

My friends and family have always kept to 3 months after the engagement to have an engagement party. However, if you want to do something in September than do it! I don't think there is anything wrong with getting a small group of your friends and family to celebrate your engagement, especially if you are going to do a bbq.

I'd say go for it if you want to. I agree it's a little late, but who really cares? Everyone likes a good party :)

You are still before the year mark.. I did mine 6 moths after we got engaged. Wanted mine around the year mark and in my moms backyard

When are you getting married?
We got engaged in January and we are having our Eparty in 2 weeks....we are getting married June 2012.
Who cares what people say, if you want to celebrate, celebrate...the ones who are happy for you and want to celebrate as well will be there!! GL HTH

We were engaged March 29th, we're getting married next July 20th and we're not having our engagement party until Dec 16. (Because FH's mother is throwing it in Tampa, and that's the next time we'll be down.)

It is definitely not to late to have an engagement party! We got engaged last May and had our party in October - you still have plenty of time until your wedding - go for it!!!

I don't think its too late! I think as long as you leave 9 months to a year between the e-party and the wedding you're good!

No way! We had our party 2 years before the wedding and people questioned it... they always will. You just got engaged! You deserve a fun celebration.

Thanks so much for all your advice! It definitely makes me feel a little more at ease planning it and enjoying it. I just felt like I got some disapproving reactions from some people about not having it sooner. We just didn't have any time!! lol
Oh, and my wedding is on September 8, 2012...so it would almost be a exactly a year before.
We were hoping to have our engagement photos done for the party as well! :)

I always say 6 months after but who cares ... if you were getting married in Dec then I would say no.

Of course not!!!! I got engaged January 2010 and I had an engagement party August 2010. It is definitely not too late.

I think you should do what you want, if you want a party have a party!!
But, I did looked up engagement party etiquette and even etiquette says you can still have the party
This is what I found
For those with especially long engagements, engagement parties are held one to three months after the engagement, and/or about a year before the wedding.
For others it can be held any time more than six months before the wedding

Go for it! Especially since its a backyard party and nothing super fancy. At least its a year before the wedding so it doesn't feel like you are over celebrating.

there is no definitive timline. your wedding isnt for over a year so i think its fine do w/e u want!!!

I don't think there is anything wrong with having the party in September! The weather will be nice for a backyard party and your wedding is still a year away.
