Is it wrong for me to be infuriated about this??

Is it wrong for me to be infuriated about this??

So, here's the deal:

My FH's brother is married to a total witch. She's very spoiled and obnoxious, and has to be the center of attention at all times. Everyone in my FH's family pretty much thinks she forced FH's brother to marry her because all of her friends were getting married. Their wedding was in 2003, and she still talks about it all the time as if it was yesterday. We'll be at family functions and someone will ask me a question about the wedding plans, and this is how the conversation will go:
Family member: 'Claire, have you decided on the flowers yet?'
ME: 'Yes, actually we've decided that we're going with...'
Evil FSIL rudely interrupting me: 'At MY wedding we had the most beautiful flowers ever...'
I've sort of learned to deal with that and ignore her as does the rest of the family.

Anyway, the latest in her LONG list of offensive behaviors is the worst yet.

Here's some background info:
She is currently working as a teacher full time and attending law school at night (she won't be done with law school until May 2007). FH's brother is a mutual fund manager, works ridiculous hours (leaves the house at 5AM and doesn't get home until 9 or 10PM, works holidays, weekends, etc.) and also has a debilitating back problem that causes him pain 24 hours a day. He can't walk up stairs, tie his shoes, or basically get comfortable in any position. He's on the waiting list to have surgery to correct the problem, but the surgery only has a 50% success rate, and he's not even sure when he'll be able to get a date for the surgery at this point.

When FH and I got engaged, she started talking about wanting to have a baby, but FH's brother told everyone that they absolutely weren't going to start trying until after she was out of law school. Needless to say, there is no way I would be actively trying to get pregnant if I was in school, working, and my husband was practically bedridden with no end in sight (everyone in the family pretty much shares this opinion). Well, she dropped it for a while and then started bringing it up again this fall. My FMIL and I were even joking around that she was going to try and steal the spotlight by announcing that she's pregnant at our wedding (FMIL joked she would announce it at the rehearsal dinner, I said I wouldn't put it past her to announce it while we're cutting the cake at the reception).

Anyway, they just announced that she's pregnant and is due....get this....9 DAYS AFTER OUR WEDDING!!!!!!! I know I should be happy because a baby is such a wonderful thing, but I am so angry! I feel like this was really deliberate timing. She even joked when they told us that she couldn't believe how lucky they were because they got pregnant on their first try and they had only had $ex once in the last three months because of FH's brother's back problems. Ok, so his back is so bad that he can't even have $ex with his wife, but you're trying to get pregnant? The really bizarre thing is that FH's brother didn't seem excited at all, and had this forced smile on his face the whole time. As soon as we were alone, the first thing that my FH said to me was, 'Was is just me or did it seem like my brother was totally weird? I don't think he knew they were 'trying.'

I hope I'm not being a selfish little bridezilla about this...I just had to vent. Am I wrong to be upset?

Ok, let me get this straight. You think that someone else got pregnant at the exact right time just to take away from your wedding?

No, based on the details you gave, you aren't wrong to be upset. I'm sure they weren't trying to take away from your wedding but, based on the way it sounds, I'm sure she's happy she did.

I hope your FSIL has thought the whole baby thing through fully! It seems that it's not a good time for them to start a family right now, your wedding aside.

Well, one thing, you may not ever have to listen to compare her wedding to your wedding because she might not make it!!! That might be a good thing.

I think the whole family knows what she's up to, so I wouldn't worry about it.

if she can't make your wedding because she had the baby or whatnot, don't worry.

honestly, she had her day and yes, people will talk about it, but the family knows and sort of assumes it was deliberate.

you can joke that she wanted the baby born on the wedding day!

look at it this way, she can't even have sex often. she fishing for attention.

And really, you are going to be an aunt. That is great news.

I wouldn't fret too much over the timing.

My brothers had a similar issue, but the reverse... My oldest brothers wife found out she was pregnant the day my other brother got engaged... they went to my brother and asked that they NOT have the wedding last june because she was due June 18th... so what was the wedding day they chose?? June 19th.... Mind you, this all went down about 3 weeks after I got engaged.... Do not let it ruin your spotlight... remember that regardless of what happens even 10 minutes before your wedding, YOU ARE THE BRIDE AND IT IS YOUR DAY (my sil told me that one as my MH was having a hissy fit 3 hours before the wedding).... You and your FH are the ones who determine how your special time will be.... even if someone else steals the spotlight temporarily, you will still have your moment

From what you said it sounds like she did this delierately just to keep attention on herself. I think if it was deliberate it's very selfish of her. I hope your day is beautiful and I'm sorry she's acting this way.

it's kind of hard to understand why you're mad here.

she sounds like a real jerk, but it's not so easy to get pregnant. I really don't think she got preggo just to steal your thunder.

I think it can be pretty easy to get pg, hence all the 'surprise' babies in the world.

well sure, I guess it all depends on the person. but with her infrequent opportunities to conceive (according to the original poster) I just wonder how this could have possibly been a plot.

I have to agreen 100% here. Most people do not know that even when done at the exact right moment in your cycle, there is only a 25% chance of getting pregnant. I promise you that after your wedding, you will look back and realize that, while she may be a total jerk, she was probably not out to get you when she got pregnant.

Is it really that hard to get pregnant????

If you are extremely regular, does it up your chances???

25% IS for someone who is extremely regular. It only decreases from there. I was shocked to find this out, myself. I was very curious because we were fortunate enough to get pregnant on the first try, and I looked it up because I know how hard it is for so many other people.

She sounds like a witch - but I doubt she planned it just to coincide with your wedding (she may, however, have planned it just cause she was missing being in the spotlight - she sounds like a spotlight whore!). Try not to let her bother you - it is still your time to shine! (I feel so sad for you FBIL - if he is working so hard and has health issues, he must truly be shocked that he will be a daddy soon!)

I highly doubt that she got pregnant just to steal your thunder.

contrary to some of the other posts, i think i would be naturally upset given the background of her behavior. i think its natural to be a bit put off.

i may be wrong, but reading this, i don't think you really believe she got preggers to steal your thunder. (if i am wrong, please correct me). my take is that you are upset that this woman just seems to be an attention grabber.

of course, the new addition to the family is a great thing and of course it doesn't matter when she gives birth, your wedding day will be special.

now....your poor brother in law on the other hand... i hope he gets his surgery soon!

Re: Is it wrong for me to be infuriated about this??

First off, while I too have seen the percentages on pregnancy, can someone then explain to me how FH has a son with a woman he dated for only 2 months that he was far from trying to impregnate??? Also, FH's brother's girlfriend has a child basically, from a one night stand! Of course I also know many who have tried and tried every fertility treatment under the sun... my belief... it just depends and the more relaxed you are about it and the more you enjoy trying to conceive (hey, regular sex - what's better than that? ) the better the chances.

I go through the worries over percentages too b/c I'm 'old' at 32 and not to be married until almost really old - 34. But everyone tells me not to worry. My 37 co-worker just had a baby, my MOH's sister had her first at 38.

As for the original post... sometimes FIL's stink, and anytime she would have become pregnant - the focus would be on her. My FSIL just had a baby and my FIL's are not even asking us about the wedding... everything's the baby... it took a posting on these boards for me to understand it. Plus they got married in 2003, that seems to be an average amount of time for couples to have a kid after the wedding... to steal your thunder for an 18 year (or more) commitment to a huge responsibility may be a little much. However, I can totally relate to losing the 'attention' for your wedding. Try to stay positive about being an Aunt... hey if she gives birth right before your wedding maybe she won't even be there to bug you - just a thought...

Re: Is it wrong for me to be infuriated about this??

well I
ve read about these percentages before and I guess if that's what scientific evidence says, it must be so. Just to clarify, I do believe she (from what was posted) is the kind of person that always wants attention on her, and I do believe she got pregnant to have attention focused on her not necessarily away from the bride. I can see that her behavior makes her sound like an attention wh$re.

i have to agree with this here....i know from her past behavior it seems like she may have been trying to steal your thunder but I have many friends who are going through tough times trying to get pregnant that I cannot begrudge anyone for wnating to start a family...JMO....
