ask people on the invite to wear 'semi-formal' attire to a tent reception? People seem to have the impression that it's 'casual'....when we will be in gown and the guys are in tuxes. Is it wrong to have people dress up a little? It still is a wedding after all....

not at all!! a wedding is a wedding and unless indicated on the invite that its a 'casual' event, then guests should dress appropriately.
we are having an 11:30 outdoor ceremony and reception is from 12-5; i am not expecting floor-length gowns and tuxes, but I do expect semi-formal wear. Our hall is pretty fancy and I will be upset if I see people in jeans, shorts, or casual wear

I don't think so. You don't want people to feel embarassed either when they show up in inappropriate attire so you're really helping them

Why do you feel that people seem to think it is casual? I just want to make sure you aren't jumping to a conclusion, you are right & most people do know they have to dress up to a wedding, that's why I am a bit puzzled

I'm puzzled too because close relatives have said to me 'what should I wear?'....my reply is 'wear what you would wear to a wedding'...and they come back with....'well it's in a tent though'. It makes me CRAZY! it's not as if we are doing paper plates and soda with hotdogs! Come on people....it's still a WEDDING! I just don't get it...

Re: Is it wrong to...
usually it is assumed a wedding is semi formal if nothing is mentioned about the attire. if it is casual- or black tie- it will be indicated on the invite- I thought that was common knowledge. LOL.

It's your wedding!! I don't want people dressing casual to my wedding either and I am afraid people will because of the whole beach theme I have going on.

Jen, I have 'Evening Attire Requested' on mine. Not wrong at all! It's your wedding, and if you want a certain look, say so. No worries!

omg omg! now that you've elaborated i hands down agree they are being ridiculous, very formal events can take place in a tented venue & seeing as how this is hard for them to grasp, maybe you should put a small wording on formal attire ppl!

Re: Is it wrong to...
I dont think so...that is why we specified 'formal reception immediately following' on our invites

Re: Is it wrong to...
I would never assume a wedding was casual, unless it was in the yard.
