Is my baby normal or fussy/gassy?
Matthew is almost 1 month old, and we love him to death. He does keep us quite busy though. I have been bf/supplementing.... I now for the most part do every other feeding a bottle, and the feedings that are bf I also give him about 1 ounce extra. Here's my question. He seems to be content when eating, he usually falls asleep. Just when you think you can get a moments rest, we put him down and then he wakes up... sometimes he'll be content for awhile, others he'll cry right away. When he has his good moments, he may be happy for 45 minutes after a feeding (where we put him on a playmat, etc) and then he cries and fusses for the next hour or so until the next feeding. Is it normal for a baby to have very little 'non fussy time'? Is it possible he may be allergic to the formula? We seem to spoil him and pick him up when he fusses.... should we let him be sometimes? Well, I know that was more than one question.... my main one is it normal for him to be what it seems as miserable most of the time? Thanks.

Re: Is my baby normal or fussy/gassy?
We had Jenna on Similac Advance the first 2 weeks and she was extremely fussy and gassy most of the day-always bunching her little legs up and crying. We switched her over to Isomil Advance (soy) and now she is much, much better, she still gets gassy (mainly at night) but she farts easier
and seems more content.

1st off you can not spoil a newborn... no matter how much you hold them. If they cry you build their trust when you pick them up and comfort them.
Does he fuss after you breastfeed only?? Is the fussy time only after formula? Have you tried feeding him sooner? Maybe hes just a hungry baby. Do you have a sling or a carrier you can carry him around in? Maybe its that he misses the closeness and has nothing to do with the formula.

Re: Is my baby normal or fussy/gassy?
He seems to fuss no mattew what about 45 minutes after eating or so. My doctor had suggested possibly switching formula because as a child I was allergic.... but I don't really want to switch if this isn't the problem. I guess if he is fussy regardless of whether he eats by bf or formula, maybe he is just fussy?

Re: Is my baby normal or fussy/gassy?
Maybe its the bottles making him gassy, too much air getting in the little belly. Is he having normal bowel movements? Does he need to be burped when you pick him up 45 mins later? Does he look like hes in pain? Is he hungry when he fusses? What could it hurt to switch to a new brand and see if it gets better?

That is EXACTLY what I did and I have a different child. She is so much more relaxed. I wish I would've done it sooner. I waited until she was seven weeks. I was such a nervous nellie.

I know-she is a different child (although I hate the way the soy smells)-I had a severe milk allergy as an infant and was actually on goats milk
so i'm wondering if it's somewhat hereditary.

My daughter had to switch too. Better to deal with the smell of the soy then a unhappy little one. I am so glad I switched her.

I was allergic too as a child. I had to go on soy and my brother had to go on goats. Too funny. I agree the soy smells real bad, but I'll take it over what I had in the beginning.

Re: Is my baby normal or fussy/gassy?
I am not a mom, but from what my mother has told me about myself when I was a baby, I was ALWAYS fussy. It turned out to be two things: a milk allergy and reflux. Don't know if that helps, but thought I would interject that.

When my son was little he had really bad gas too. We tried the Mylicon drops, but it didn't help. There was nothing we could do because I was only BF. He was very gassy until he was 3-4 months old. Some babies just are. Maybe it's not the formula?

Re: Is my baby normal or fussy/gassy?
It can range from something you eat to the formula.... Alex got very gassy after we supplemented him with enfamil... Mylicon drops only heled every other now and then... what worked best was keeping your (or your DH) warm hand on the babys belly and lay them over your legs and rub gently with your fingers on his belly and pat his back with the other hand... Did that make sense? I found that the stretching of his abdominal area made it easier for gas to escape... also if your babys REALLY cranky cause of gas you can lay them on their back and take their legs and gently press their knees to their chest... The peditrician did that to alex once and the relief on my boys face was amazing!!!! Good LUCK!Welcome New Vendors
