Is NYC ceremony too far?

Is NYC ceremony too far?

My FH and I are an interfaith couple - he is Jewish and I am Catholic. I want to get married someplace other than our hall, and we can't use a Catholic/Christian church or a temple, so our options are obviously limited.

I found a gorgeous Unitarian church in NYC, but my mom thinks that the city is 'too far' from the North Ritz Club, where our reception will be.

What do you all think? Is the city too far? We're getting married on July 4th - will traffic be a nightmare?

I think traffic is something to consider also parking at the church might be costly. If you want to do it then you should go for it.

That is going to be tough with traffic as it is the 4th. I work in the city and the 4th is tough with all the grid lock for the firework show. That and a lot of the avenues are closed to traffic for the holiday.....

Is it the one on the UES or UWS? UES is doable cause you're so close to the GW - just plan accordingly. UWS is too far I think...

BTW, there's a really pretty unitarian church in Manhasset area. I'm pretty sure it's unitarian.

On the 4th large chunks of the city are closed to traffic.

I wouldn't advise having your guests try and get through that.

I think it's ok.

I think it would be too much for your guests, especially if they get stuck in traffic and on July 4th weekend its a good possibility.

I agree, parking and traffic in the city are horrid, especially on a holiday weekend.. We had similiar issues too, I wanted the ceremony at my church, but it's here in the city, and FH lives and our reception is on LI, why don't you try someplace like Westbury Gardens?

You will need to have a BIG lapse in time between the ceremony and the reception if you were to chose to do that. Otherwise, you and your guests could get stuck in a ton of traffic and nobody would be at your cocktail hour.

Also, if you're going to do that you should be okay with guests decided only to go to the reception. Honestly, I wouldn't schlep into the city on July 4th for a ceremony, I would just go to the reception.

I would only go to the reception if the ceremony was in NYC on July 4th.

I agree with traffic and the lack of parking I probably wouldn't go to the ceremony.

DO NOT go into the city July 4th. They have firework shows and extras. I went last year and streets were closed off. I think it would just be an extra headache.

We're getting married at my church in downtown brooklyn at 3pm, and our recetion in woodbury starts at 7.

i think it would be a logistics nightmare to have the wedding in the city then the reception on the island - july 4th - the traffic alone would keep me from attending the wedding.
i think you should really think about that before you do it.
there are places on long island to get married that would be easier to get to.

The people very close to you will go out of their way to see the ceremony, however a great majority will probably not come to the ceremony . . .

You girls bring up some great points. As I thought about this during the day, I realized how ridiculous it would be to try and get into the city on the 4th of July.

I'm still not sure what we will do for the ceremony, but I know it won't be in Manhattan!

As always, thanks for the advice.

There are very nice Unitarian Chapels in Great Neck and in LLoyd Neck (Huntington).

I think it might be really tough. How about trying churches in Queens like Bayside or something like that. That would cut at least a 1/2 hour out of the comute for people.

I had seen the chapel at CW Post. If you are having under 200 guests, that is a really nice location for a wedding ceremony. And they have a list of interfaith ministers.

who are you using as an officient ?
he or she should be able to help you find something closer to where your reception is.
