Was anyone else worried that Patken's style was too trendy or contemporary for wedding photography. I like their style but also want my traditional pictures.

I didnt think so, but I will say that I didnt like the sample pics with the girls showing their garter or the nude e-pics. But I am also pretty conservative.

When you sit with your photographer, you can discuss if you want more traditional photos, its a matter of personal choice

Did you end up using them. My fiance and I did not like the leg or nudes either.

No, definately not. They do whatever you want, whether it's traditional or photojournalistic.

we're using them, but they will be told that i don't want the 'hiked up skirt' shot with FH kissing neck, i will not lay on the ground, and i will not be 'sexy'. But other than that, i think they have good shots... and mix up the traditional with contemporary.

I think that if you weren't comfortable after meeting with them, then keep looking. Don't try to talk yourself into a photographer. There are plenty of great photographers, and I'm sure you will click with one. JMO...

I think most photogrpahers will do whatever poses you want. It's just a matter of feeling cofortable with them and the quality of their shots. Do they capture the moment? Are the colors right? is there ugly lens flare? etc

We used them..they will do whatever you want! just tell them. If you want traditional, that is what you will get. tell em you dont like the leggarter shots and tehy wont take them. My proofs consist of traditonal, photojournalisic, we have two with leg up garter showing, neither of which we put in oru album..but i still like having a few pics like that..our actual album is mostly photpjournalisitc, thats what we wanted..but when you meet with them..look through their albums..you will see so many styles, they are talented photographers and Im sure will give you what you ask for...good luck!

Re: Is Patken too Contemporary?
When we went to visit Patken, we thought their work was excellent - very diverse. But a little too pricey for us.
I just wanted to post because I am dying laughing over here about the nude engagement photos. My FH and I look at each other when we are getting undressed or something and joke about the naked pics. This is only because we would not look good taking pics like those!

You tell them what shots you want...I think those that got the 'risque' pics wanted those. They probably just wanted to show you that it's an option. When we booked them they told us that you tell them exactly what shots you want and that's what you get. I can't wait!!

I think you should probably keep looking. Although you can tell them what kind of shots you want, photographers do have their own personal style, and if that style doesn't blend with your own, you may not be happy with the results. I'm not saying you should count them out, but look around and see if there's another place your more comfortable with.

Thats what Doug told us. He will take any picture we ask him to take.

What did you think of the square pictures? Did everyone get the 20X20 portrait?

Re: Is Patken too Contemporary?
I personally definitely did NOT think they were too contemporary. In fact, I thought the opposite and I thought that most of their shots were too traditional and old-school looking. Everyone's looked the same... the same typical poses with the same backdrop. Maybe it was just the albums I happened to pick up. But like everyone else is saying, I think they will do more of whatever you want, just make sure you are comfortable with your photographer.

Re: Is Patken too Contemporary?
I got the same impression as Jimmysbride, I saw all of the same poses and thought it looked very POSED and unnatural, dated!! I feel that every wedding should be treated like a different event, so the photographer should really work to get the feel of the couple and families.
